This is in no way an editorial; it's just my garbled thoughts on the world of sports. So here you go.
It took a little convincing for me to understand why NASCAR is a sport. But a fan put it to me like this. Let’s see you control a car going 200MPH for that long. And from then on, I became a believer. I am not a fan, but I do understand.
I believe anything that you can do better than someone else can be a sport, although the Olympics have a lot of questionable events that are considered sports.
Now, horse racing I would consider a sport. But equestrianism? Come on, are you telling me that someone actually wants to see a dressage? Competitive eating is more of a spectacle than a sport, yet I can’t stop watching shows like The Glutton Bowl. And the little guy from Asia that has a six-pack and beats the pants off these large fellows. Yo! He is an athlete in every sense of the word.
Video games are a gift from God. They can make all men truly equal. No matter race, creed, ethnicity, or even disability. Who would have thought that you could unite all humanity with a simple electronic device?
There are several people out there that couldn’t fulfill their dreams of being Michael Jordan or Barry Sanders, but you can play your favorite team against their favorite team. I don’t care where you’re from or what your occupation is, if you play video games, you have a common bond.
You could put two members of rival hate groups together, two people that would kill each other in the street, but give them the chance to test next year's Madden, and those guys would be civil for hours.
So even though there is not any real energy expelled from playing video games, it is all about sports.
In my opinion, poker is not a sport and it never will be unless you can tackle the dealer if you have a bad hand. Until then, emphatically NO!
