The Chicago Blackhawks continue their surprising opening day of free agency by signing the best available defenseman, Brian Campbell, away from the San Jose Sharks. The deal is reportedly for eight years and $56.8 million, or a $7.1M annual cap hit.

Earlier in the day the Blackhawks signed the best available goaltender in the market, Cristobal Huet, to a four year, $22.5 million contract.

It's about time the Blackhawks got serious. I think these moves get them in the playoffs for sure, if not more

I would have preferred they sign Hossa over Campbell, since they need more help up front, but I'm not complaining about the Huet deal.
