With the recent announcement of the Evan Dunham vs Tyson Griffin fight I thought it would be cool to look at some other fights, that would be great to see if Team alliances could be put to one side.
For many of these fighters their team mates are guys they train, sweat and bleed with day in and day out. Therefore for many fighters its just simply never going to happen. But as Dunham and Griffin have proved some can put the friendship to one side and get on with the business of fighting.
I'm sure some of these fights are matches Dana White and Joe Silva would love to make, however unlikely they are. These are just my personal favorites that I would like to see the most. Hey at least we get to play them out here on B/R!
This would be a match I'd love to see now that Wanderlei has moved down to the 185lbs division. With Maia being part of Team Wand MMA, it is of course highly unlikely to ever happen. But should Wanderlei beat Bisping and Maia win at UFC 109 could a title shot opportunity force these two to fight?
It would be a classic striker vs grappler match up, although Wanderlei does have ground ability it is not on Maia's level. Silva's best bet would be to keep the fight standing and test Maia's chin in the way that Marquardt did. Maia as always would want this to hit the floor as quickly as possible, which could lead to a lot of grappling against the cage, where Wanderlei's Muay Thai could make the fight interesting.
It's just a highly intriguing match up for me and would actually serve as extremely relevant in the current UFC middleweight divisional standings. Who you got?
Not sure who the chick in the middle is LOL!! But this fight is PPV gold for the UFC and would be a great fight as well should it ever happen.
With Couture now back in the LHW division its again not an inconceivable fight, but in reality it is unlikely to happen for the Xtreme couture fighters. One possibility I could see would be a retirement fight for Randy against Griffin as it would be a great fight to end his career on.
The fight itself would be very even in my books with neither fighter having a huge advantage in any area. Griffin's reach and leg kicks would be a good weapon for him, as would Randy's Greco wrestling for him, but with neither fighter having real KO power I would see this going to a decision.
This for me is the one fight that is just going to have to happen sooner or later. Arguably the No.2 and No.3 in the Welterweight division, the AKA team mates are extremely closely matched.
Having both fought GSP once and lost their is not an obvious path for them should they keep winning. Seeing these two square off could easily headline a card and could very well decide the future champion should GSP ever move up to middleweight.
Personally I just want to see this happen to see who is the better fighter. Both have stellar wrestling credentials, good top control and solid striking. Therefore there is a risk they would cancel each other out. The difference for me would be the power Koscheck carries in his hands. Fitch was not stopped even after five rounds of pain inflicted by GSP, could Koscheck KO his team mate? Its a possibility, but unlikely. So I would go with a Koscheck decision on this one.
A classic teacher vs pupil match up here that could very well be a passing of the torch. The potential for a war is huge and this could certainly elevate Dos Santos to the top of the division.
Dos Santos has so far only really displayed his striking in the UFC with vicious KO wins. With Nog's famous chin and heart a KO would be unlikely, which leads me to think that we could finally see his ground skills tested by his trainer, Big Nog. If it did hit the floor, at this stage I would still expect Nogueira to have the edge.
Its really a flip a coin fight for me, so I'll stay on the fence for now!
A dream fight for many MMA fans, places the current UFC middleweight champion against the current light-heavyweight champion. This is a fight I would love to see and with recent comments from Father Machida it may happen one day despite what the two friends have said.
If this fight did ever come to fruition in would be a fantastic contest of styles. Machida's famed karate against the Muay Thai of Anderson. Both fighters have great striking and carry KO power, but again I think this fight could end up being decided on the ground. With that being said its pretty hard to pick the better fighter on the ground.
I really don't know on this one? I'd go with Anderson just based on my gut instinct but its an incredibly hard fight to pick.
