The battle for mammoth Ohio offensive lineman Matt James is over, and the Irish are victorious.
Over Ohio State and his original commitment to Cincinnati, four-star OL Matt James chose Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish, faxing his letter of intent to South Bend.
For Kelly and company, James' commitment means they've successfully landed their first major non-Weis prospect and shaken off the bad feelings about this class, which has suffered its share of attrition and missed opportunity.
How this hybrid Weis/Kelly class will finally look remains in doubt, as the Irish make late pitches to Dietrich Riley, Seantrel Henderson, and others.
But in the meantime, the Irish have to be pleased with Kelly's late efforts in landing James. It's never easy to come in and manufacture a relationship with a recruit.
Luckily, Kelly didn't need to do that since he'd known James while at Cincinnati, but he was able to capitalize on the relationship nonetheless.
What that means for Seantrel Henderson's commitment is grounds for speculation. The most recent word is that the five-star prospect now favors USC and Miami, and the Buckeyes have slipped to third, ahead of Minnesota.
