Today the Hamilton Tigercats announced that they have released punter/kicker Nick Setta. I can't say it comes as a surprise, as he did an awful job after the Labour Day game up until about the last two games of the season when the Cats pressured him by signing Jeremy Ito.
Setta had been inconsistent and was 38-of-50 on field goals last year. His punts were quite sloppy, too. Being rated as one of the most accurate kickers in the league, he may have lost his touch and the Tigercats felt that they couldn't take the risk anymore.
The following are some excerpts from tigercats.ca : "Nick was a respected member of this team and community as well as a hard worker both on and off the field. We would like to thank him for his contributions and wish him the best in the future," said head coach Marcel Bellefeuille.
"We just felt like we needed to more consistent at that position," Bellefeuille said later via telephone. "The consistency factor came into effect and we felt it was necessary at this point in time to release Nick. Hopefully he'll have an opportunity to continue looking for an opportunity to work."
Bellefeuille went on to say, "We had Jeremy Ito here last year and he did great job coming in the last game of the season and the most important game of the year for us and did a nice job there. We’ll also continue to look at other American kickers and possibly look at some kickers at some camps down in the States. We’ll see what’s available in the draft and trade as well. We're going to look at every possible avenue to improve our kicking game."
It looks like we'll have to wait and see if the Cats have confidence in Mr. Ito or if they look at someone else. Time is on their side as they have a huge chunk of offseason left. I'm sure the wheelin' and dealin' isn't done yet, even though there's already been some action in the CFL so far.
