The Philadelphia 76ers have a huge anchor weighing them down, and that anchor is named Elton Brand. The recipient of a huge contract two seasons ago, all he has done is get hurt and put up poor numbers.
Believe me, I know. He was my first round fantasy pick last year (thank you very much, Yahoo automatic rankings).
Brand is untradeable, because no GM in his right mind (which actually leaves about four teams that could chase him) would take that burden on, especially heading into this summer.
The Sixers' GM has come out and said that no one on the team is "untouchable," and that's where the Mavs come in.
The 76ers have assets, such as Andre Iguodala. Iguodala is that type of scorer the Mavs need since he gets to the rim, gets to the line, and works well creating his own shot.
Iggy would work well in the two man game, which the Mavericks like to run a lot of with players like Jason Terry, and Iguodala is a much more dynamic version of Terry.
Now, my dream trade scenario would be Josh Howard and Najera for Igoudala and some filler, like forward Jason Smith.
Would the 76ers give up their best scorer for salary cap relief? Probably not, because who knows where Iverson will be next year, but he can't be counted on.
Now, Howard would fill a gap Philly had at small forward, but he's clearly a downgrade from Iguodala, and that's if the Sixers even decide to keep him.
So the Mavs would have to offer some long term cap relief, and if they could do that by solving another problem, that would be ideal for both teams.
Well, how about if you toss Erick Dampier in the mix for Samuel Dalembert?
Dalembert is a younger, similar version of Damp, but he's more mobile, a better free throw shooter, and a bit more athletic. The Sixers have been trying to dump his contract for a while too.
The 76ers would still have Brand, Marreese Speights, Lou Williams, and others to build around, and they'd have about $25 million in cap space to do their rebuilding.
The Mavs would get a shooting guard and center combo that could take them into the next few years.
Basically, Iggy and Dalembert would be replacing Howard with Dirk, Lou Williams with Jason Kidd, and Jason Kapono with Shawn Marion. Sounds like pretty good upgrades to me.
This trade would benefit both teams and could push the Mavericks over the top this season, though it would cost them a chance at someone in the Wade/LeBron/Bosh group of free agents.
