Cleveland Browns: 2010 NFL Draft Has Lots of Talent and More Picks Are Needed

Daniel WolfJan 28, 2010

The Cleveland Browns have many holes to fill in their roster and the 2010 NFL Draft pool is loaded with talent with possible starters, even in the fourth round.

One of the best ways the Browns and new president Mike Holmgren can rebuild the team into a contender fast is to get as many picks for this draft as possible.

The Browns already have 11 picks in this upcoming draft, but the best value for picks is easily in rounds two through four, and there are many gems that could step in and produce in the 2010 season.

Two easy ways to acquire more draft picks would be to draft down in the first round and to trade defensive lineman Shaun Rogers.

Trading down in the first round may net the Browns an extra second round pick from another team willing to move up. Many Browns fans may not think this is a good idea, especially if Florida's Joe Haden is still available at cornerback, since the Browns desperately need a starting caliber corner.

There is a chance that currently projected second round cornerbacks like Michigan's Donovan Warren, Oklahoma State's Perrish Cox, Oklahoma's Dominque Franks, and Kentucky's Trevor Lindley could start for the Browns on opening day, so do not think that a starter cannot be found later.

Plus, there would be an extra second round pick to use too.

Now if (and that's a big if) the Browns brass is looking to shop Rogers, there is a good chance that they can get a first and third round pick for him from a top tier team that needs a big man in the middle of their defense to put them over the top.

It has been printed by cleveland.com that the Browns' defense was even better after Rogers went down with an injury for the season and when backup Athyba Rubin stepped in.

Rubin apparently controls the line better than Rogers because Rogers likes to rush the opposing quarterback more than following his assignments as the anchor of the 3-4 defense.

Adding another first and a third round pick would help put the Browns in a position to have a knockout draft, since they would be able to address so many more needs.

In the third round, the Browns currently hold two picks at 71 and 92, but adding another would give the Browns another pick from the third round prospects that include Stanford running back Toby Gerhert, Cincinnati wide receiver Mardy Gilyard, Ole Miss' running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster, USC tight end Anthony McCoy, Georgia safety Reshad Jones, and Iowa's monster offensive tackle Kyle Calloway.

So why are there so many talented players in this year's draft?

The answer is quite simple: With a pending rookie salary cap looking to occur in 2011, many juniors have come out early in order to cash in on what might be the last year of an uncapped rookie class.

This is more reason for the Browns to capitalize on this draft for the future of the team.

Looking at all the mock drafts that are across that Internet, there is so much talent in the draft class that the Browns could use that making a few more trades to get more picks just seems to make sense right about now.

All of this can change after the NFL Combine, but it is highly unlikely that all this talent will fail to impress scouts and coaches at the end of February.

Quarterback Derek Anderson (since he's due a big bonus in March), cornerback Brandon McDonald (too inconsistent), and defensive end Corey Williams (who has a huge salary) are all other candidates for trades and can get the Browns more middle to lower round picks too.
