Recruiting: Mississippi State Seeking One More QB
Dan Mullen was in Mobile, Ala., on Tuesday, watching one of his former pupils prepare for Saturday’s Senior Bowl. Kid by the name of Tim Tebow.
With National Signing Day a week away, Mullen is hoping to land at least one more quarterback for Mississippi State’s 2010 class. There don’t appear to be any Tebows out there for the Bulldogs, although two pretty good ones have recently gotten away.
Barry Brunetti, a dual-threat QB from Memphis University School, led MSU on after visiting Starkville the weekend before last. But on Monday, he reaffirmed his commitment to West Virginia.
On New Year’s Eve, former Florida quarterback Cameron Newton chose Auburn over MSU and his former position coach.
According to Scout.com, Newton is a four-star recruit, while Brunetti rates three stars.
So the only quarterback committed to State thus far is Dylan Favre of St. Stanislaus. That would give MSU three scholarship quarterbacks on roster, with Chris Relf returning and Tyler Russell coming off a redshirt freshman year. Mullen has said that he wants at least four scholarship quarterbacks on hand at all times.
So who might Mullen be targeting now? Well, the pickings look mighty slim:
- Coty Blanchard (6-foot-1, 180 pounds), of Cherokee County High School in Centre, Ala. He’s committed to Jacksonville State, but that’s the only school that’s offered him. Rivals.com says MSU is higher on Blanchard’s list than any other schools.
- Nick Bracewell (6-3, 210), of Lafayette High School in Mayo, Fla. He’s not been offered by State or any other BCS school.
- Brandon Doughty (6-21⁄2, 183), of North Broward Prep in Coconut Creek, Fla. MSU’s the only BCS school to offer him a scholarship.
- Nash Nance (6-31⁄2, 205), of Calhoun, Ga. He has been offered, but he’s committed to Vanderbilt. He’s also received offers from Harvard, Tennessee and West Virginia.
There are no Tebows in that group, but if Mullen can get one of them to come to Starkville, he’ll be satisfied with what he’s got.
