Alabama's Roy Upchurch Finally Gets Chance To Shine at Running Back
Roy Upchurch would have been a star on any other team.
The problem was he was playing behind this year's Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram and a possible future Heisman winner in Trent Richardson.
He has size, he's speedy, and despite playing behind some brilliant runners, and let's not forget he backed up Glen Coffee too, he still has some great memories and a ton of highlights to boot.
Now on national TV, he will be one of the south's running backs in the Senior Bowl in Mobile.
The addition of Upchurch, a native of Tallahassee, Fla., gives the 2009 national champion Crimson Tide six players in the Senior Bowl. Upchurch will join Javier Arenas, Terrence Cody, Mike Johnson, Colin Peek, and Leigh Tiffin in today's opening practice.
Upchurch got the nod to enter the game very late, when LSU's Charles Scott reported he couldn't attend with problems still remaining from a collar bone injury.
This will just give Upchurch one more chance to shine in front of NFL scouts who will be packing the crowd.
Earlier this year when I was interviewing Heisman winner Mark Ingram, he said of Upchurch, "Roy is a talented running back, one of the best, there is no jealousy among the running backs, and we all have faith in one another. I can tell you this, Roy would be starting on most any other team. He's really that good."
So for the senior running back to take the field one more time with five of his teammates, we wish him a great showing and a shot at the NFL for all his hard work.
