ESPN Insider: Paying For Garbage
For the low low cost of 2.50 per month (at a 2 year rate) one can become an ESPN “insider”. This provides individuals with access to articles that only “insiders” can read, and a plethora of other goodies like: the ESPN insider magazine, access to rumours, exclusive updates and newsletters, and of course a free team gift upon purchase of the insider package. I’m an insider because I like to be in the “loop” in the sports world, primarily the NFL.
Originally I thought insider was an incredible package offering a wealth of information, now I’m only satisfied with the magazine (and my Eagles jacket that came with it). However after two years of being a member I have realized truly how absurd this package really is. My biggest beef, the “insider” rumours, which for the most part are what people sign up to read. In two years over the NFL offseason I have easily seen these so called insiders come up with 50+ rumours a day which obviously drives in traffic like wildfire. Nearly any of these rumours have come true, and I almost find it more reliable to rely on sites like Yardbarker, or Footballguys (A collection of dedicated fans).
Looking over today’s rumors I was prompted to write this post. Since 8:47 this morning,(it is now 2:13), there have been 17 rumour posts from the “insiders”. And I find that truly absurd; why? because even if some of these stories are true, they are not newsworthy. ESPN amongst many others should strive only to produce work of the utmost journalistic integrity, not publish arbitrary rumors for the sake of gaining traffic (; what I should be doing lol). With all this in mind let’s take a look at these 17 rumours so far:
Matt Moore | Panthers
Panthers QB impresses in closing weeks of 2009. Is he in line to start next season?
- I hope this is a joke, even the most unaware Panthers fan knows that Delhomme is John Fox’s Love Child and will be starting for at least one more season.
Vikings CB shreds knee on kickoff coverage, with 2010 status up in the air.
- This does carry with it a shred of hope, however reporting that someones status is up in the air for the 2010 season hours after his injury is subject at best, look for continuing and conflicting reports to come out in the next few.
Jets might let Thomas walk after running so far in 2009.
- A good one here with the recent success of Shonn Greene, however Jones still has one year left on his contract, so letting him “walk” next year doesn’t seem likely. Rather trading him for some return value seems like an option.
The latest buzz on disgruntled Broncos WR.
- For the insiders you can’t have a day without mentioning a big name like this. Yes Brandon Marshall “WAS” disgruntled. But that was prior to starting off the season 6-1 and setting the record for most receptions in a game. Marshall may still be a little furious given the way the season ended, however the front office and Josh McDaniel’s arent quite ready to give up on him yet.
Frazier’s prospects increase?
