The Philadelphia Eagles defense is rated 13Th at NFL.com we have acquired Asante Samuels the No. 1 interception man and Chris Clemons, a fast defensive end who had eight sacks not even playing the entire season with Oakland. Then of course there are players like Brian Dawkins and Takeo Spikes who have always rocked. Philly has always been in at the least top ten and its only gotten better from there so why are we 13th ranked in defense?
Hopefully next season people will realize how good our defense is.

As a Philly fan, I'm not impressed by you. Yes, the secondary is one of the best in the NFL, but, besides Trent Cole, the DL is only average. Clemons is only average as well. And, the LB core is young and average as well. Gaither is their best LB. Bradley and Gocong are only average as well. Spikes isn't even on the team anymore, and he sucked. And Dawkins is old an ineffective. Quintin Mikell will be a better player than Dawkins this year. You are way off...we are a top 20 defense, maybe top 15.

top 20 are you kidding me? Last year the Eagles defense was ranked in the league’s top 10 in three key defensive categories. The defense was ninth in points allowed, 10th in yards against, and seventh in rushing-yards allowed.
in 2008 the eagles will have samuel, a healthy lito, a healthy dawkins, and a better rotation with clemons at the DE position. top 5 is most definitely a possibility...

I love B-Dawk. Probably my favorite player of all-time. But he's getting old and its showing. But he's still a very good safety... he's just no longer one of the best in the league. He's definitely not "ineffective".
Lito's health and the addition of Asante can overcome any dropoff in safety performance.
The difference will be linebacker play. The Eagles LBs are all mediocre as of now. I think Gaither can step up and become a defensive leader but I'm worried about our LB depth. Hopefully I get proven wrong, but I believe our LBs will prevent us from cracking the top 5. My prediction would be 7th or 8th unless our linebackers can surprise me.
And the D-Line is not "only average". Trent Cole is one of the best D-ends in the league. Clemons and Juqua teamed up with Cole will be a very good line.

I'm thirteen, cry me a river... :/
Chris, besides Cole and Clemons, who do we have that can CONSISTENTLY rush the QB? Mike Patterson can't, Broderick Bunkley can't. Nobody else can.
Also, Chris, a healthy Lito is a hard thing to ask. He has missed 14 games overall over the past three seasons.
Plus, Brian Dawkins is no longer a force. He is like Junior Seau was. They aren't great players, they rarely will make an impact play. But, they are great leaders, and are very smart, so, they know what they are doing.
Also, how about passing yards allowed a game? We were 19th. And, in my opinion, a very very important category is forced turnovers. We tied for least interceptions with 11, and were tied at second to last for least fumble recoveries. We don't get the ball. Yes, we may get some more INT's because of the better secondary this year, but, our safeties, Dawkins, Mikell, and Considene won't get the job done. And, our LB core is worse this season. Spikes did at least help in the run game, and, without him, the LB core is weaker and we will not be able to stop the run as well. Finally, about the passing yards a game, we won't be much better at that. Samuel doesn't do a great job of knocking the ball down and just causing an incompletion. He goes for the INT a lot, and that leaves him to get burned sometimes.

Behind Champ, Asante has been the best corner in football. All of your arguments against the secondary are pre-Asante so they aren't persuading me. QB will be the Eagles' downfall this season as McNabb goes out in week 3 with a shoulder injury.

BTW, we had just 8 fumble recoveries, forgot to add that when I mentioned it above.

No, I pointed out that Asante won't help lower passing yards against, which we were 19th in the NFL in. He goes for the INT a lot, and it leaves him open to get burned if he doesn't get the INT. And he doesn't get the INT a good amount of times, so, he does get burned or his man receives the ball, yet, nobody pays attention to that...they only pay attention to a CB INT's, when that is only one aspect of his game. The rest of Samuel's game is average.

Is that why he had the 2nd most passes defended in the entire NFL in 2007??
Having the 2nd most passes defended and the 4th most INTs isn't really "average" in my mind. To say that Asante "won't help lower passing yards against" is just plain stupid.

Actually, there was 4 players with more INT's with him and three others who had the same amount as him, and, he was 4th in passes defended. But, that doesn't even show how many times he got beat. His style is to go for the INT, and a lot of the time he would either get the ball or break it up. But, there was a good amount of times where he got beat and the receiver got the ball.
Don't get me wrong, Asante is great, but, there are parts of his game that can hurt the Eagles.
All I'm saying is he Eagles defense is average, and I pointed out the problems in the article.

McGee and Hood had 21 and Cromartie and Asante had 18. Asante will have an impact on the defense. He's a great corner and thats what we needed to pair up with Lito. None of our corners could cover deep. Now we have a great corner that can. Its not even worth arguing with someone that thinks Asante "won't help" the Eagles' passing D.

The Eagles D is underated at 13th, but there are not top 5 material, not with the Steelers, Jags., Ravens, and others. Yes there free agency recruits are good but that's not going to make them one of the top D's in the league

There not in the top 10 because the Offense cant do anything because they pass 110% of the time and go 3 and out and the defense goes back on the field and gets tired because they are on the field for most of the game. whew i need to breath now
