2010 NHL Captains: Hot Chick Edition

When it comes to sports that attract the best looking women on the planet, hockey is undoubtedly on top. Unlike the other three major sports, hockey epitomizes the bad boy image which almost all women fall for.

Hockey players put everything on the line to compete at the highest level and while doing so they subject themselves to injuries that nobody on the outside can even imagine.

Anaheim Ducks star Teemu Selanne recently took a deflected shot off his face which broke his jaw. You think LeBron James has the balls to stand in front of the net with 100 mph frozen pucks heading in his direction? I don't think so.

Furthermore, every season in the NHL there are dozens of players who lose teeth in any given game and comeback later on in the same game to help their team win.

No other sport matches this toughness and because of it, women flock to hockey players.

Elisha Cuthbert, Carrie Underwood, and Willa Ford come to mind when thinking of some of the NHL's WAGs (wives and girlfriends) but why not get creative with women who would make a good match with some of the top stars in the game?

How about matching each captain with some of the hottest women in the world?

Now the role of captain is without a doubt most glorified in the NHL. No other sport matches the responsibilities and leadership needed from the player wearing the "C".

The Captain is nearly a player-coach. He speaks with officials, leads by example, and helps his teammates improve on their game. He also is the first to touch the Stanley Cup if his team ends up as the last team standing.

It is a position that deserves a beautiful woman by its side, and that said, let's take a look at which female celebrity best suits each captain.

Scott Niedermayer (Anaheim Ducks)-Reese Witherspoon

Stanley Cup ring? Check. Still one of the best defenseman in the game despite nearing 40? Check.

Anaheim Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer is still getting the job done despite being a 36-year-old defenseman. The former long time New Jersey Devil can still skate with the best and brightest the NHL has to offer and he is easily one of the top five captains in the game.

The same can be said for 33-year old actress Reese Witherspoon. If any director is looking for a leading lady to light up a screen, Witherspoon is still a go-to commodity in the movie industry.

Oscar? Check. Still a top leading lady? check.

Witherspoon can do it all.

Legally Blonde and Walk the Line showed this beauty's ability to bring whatever a director is looking for and this versatility has allowed for a long lasting career.

Is it just me, or would Niedermayer and Witherspoon make a good match?

Ilya Kovalchuk (Atlanta Thrashers)-Adriana Lima

Ilya Kovalchuk is a super duper star in the NHL. He may be overshadowed by fellow Russians Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin, but Kovalchuk is still amongst the most dynamic players in the league.

This Russian sniper has scored 40 or more goals in each of the last five seasons, including two where he topped 50.

So far this season Kovalchuk is on pace for his third 50 goal season and has his Thrashers just three points out of a playoff spot.

Who does he need by his side? Victoria's Secret Angel Adriana Lima of course.

She may be married to some scrub NBA player nobody's ever heard of, but who says that has to last?

It is time for Mrs. Lima to be paired with an athlete whose career can match hers, and these two are just a perfect match.

They are both flashy and productive and at the peak of their careers.

Zdeno Chara (Boston Bruins)-Bar Refaeli

At 6'9", 255 pounds, Boston's Zdeno Chara is the biggest presence in the NHL and he stares down at every single opponent.

Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli does the exact same thing. She may only be 5'8", but her career is blossoming to the point where she is one of the most searched models in the world.

She landed the coveted spot of swimsuit modeling, the cover of Sports Illustrated's 2009 swimsuit issue.

Arguably one of, if not the hottest woman on the planet, Refaeli would be a solid match for the NHL's fiercest competitor.

Craig Rivet (Buffalo Sabres)-Jennifer Connelly

Craig Rivet is one of my favorite players. In a year and a half with my beloved San Jose Sharks, he was one of the hardest workers on the team.

He would always stick up for his teammates and contribute offensively when called upon. His style of leadership and offensive abilities, as well as physicality on the defensive end, make him a quality hockey player.

But Rivet can be hit and miss.

Therefore, a quality counterpart for the Buffalo captain would be none other than the underrated Jennifer Connelly.

Starring in such films like Blood Diamond and He's Just Not That Into You, Connelly always gives a strong performance and is very easy on the eyes.

But despite her stunning appearance, Connelly gets lost in the mix of all the other famous Jennifers. Similarly, Rivet doesn't get the credit he deserves since he isn't the flashy type of playmaker.

I could see these two working quite well together.

Jarome Iginla (Calgary Flames)-Halle Berry

Consistency, consistency, consistency.

Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla has been one of the most consistent producers over the past decade in the NHL.

In the last eight seasons Iginla has scored at least 30 goals, including four seasons registering 89 points or more.

Which hot female star can match this consistency? Halle Berry. Whether as a Bond girl or as Storm in the X-Men series, Halle Berry is one of the more consistent hits at the box office.

If Halle Berry wants in on your movie, you put her in your movie.

If Jarome Iginla wants to play on your hockey team, you put him on your hockey team.

Nuff said.

Eric Staal (Carolina Hurricanes)-Hayden Panettiere

They're both young, they both have impressive careers, and they've both spent time around the Stanley Cup. It just fits.

Eric Staal is an All-Star center in this league, reaching 100 points back in Carolina's cup winning season of 2005-06, and since then has been a steady producer for the Hurricanes.

It would be only fitting for him to be matched with Hayden Panettiere, the Heroes star who has become one of the hottest young stars in Hollywood.

They're both blond and popular at what they do, they just work.

Jonathan Toews (Chicago Blackhawks)-Megan Fox

She's hot, she's young, she's successful, but what has she really done?

Megan Fox is best known for her role as Michaela in the Transformers movies, but you ask anybody and they'll tell you her actual acting isn't at the level of other leading ladies.

The same can be said for Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews. He's a young, up and coming star, but until we see him really lead his team to consistent playoff success, he won't be thought of amongst the true elite in the game.

But as for these two as a couple, well, opposites attract right? I'm sure the outgoing Fox and soft spoken Toews would make a great duo.

Adam Foote (Colorado Avalanche)-Demi Moore

Colorado captain Adam Foote is in his second stint with the Avalanche and after sustaining an ankle injury may be in danger of calling it quits.

The 18-year NHL veteran has a Stanley Cup ring from his first go around with the Avalanche but is definitely in the twilight of his career.

A perfect match would be Demi Moore, the former wife of Bruce Willis and current wife of Ashton Kutcher hasn't appeared in a box office hit in quite some time, but A Few Good Men is always on TV, so what does it matter?

You can always get your Demi Moore fix with Ghost and GI Jane, but her big time career has certainly dwindled.

So what about the nine-year age difference and the fact that she's married? How about a fourth husband whose a Stanley Cup?

Rick Nash (Columbus Blue jackets)-Amber Heard

Rick Nash is one of my favorite players because he is a perennial All-Star on a bad team.

Nash, the 25-year-old, seven year NHL veteran has scored over 40 goals twice and has tallied over 200 goals for his career. 500 points in his well within his reach even if he never finds himself on a talented team.

If he were to play with one of the league's elite passers, say like a Sidney Crosby or Joe Thornton, it wouldn't surprise me if Nash ended up with over 650 goals when his career comes to an end.

This young super star can do it all, and he deserves the Pineapple Express bombshell Amber Heard.

Amber is just two years younger than Nash and both have had similar careers. They are both brilliant at what they do but are lost in the shuffle of all the other hot young stars in their respective fields.

For Nash, dating a beautiful actress like Ms. Heard might just be exactly what the doctor ordered for having to play on a team like Columbus.

Brenden Morrow (Dallas Stars)-Jordana Brewster

Largely in part to his nearly season long injury in 2008-09, many NHL fans forget just how absolutely boss that Dallas Captain Brenden Morrow can be when he's at the top of his game.

He may have only eclipsed the 30 goal mark once in his career, but there aren't many players who can match his physicality and toughness and also be a lock for 20+ goals a season.

You may forget the name before you turn into a Stars contest, but you'll remember it afterward.

Similarly, there is Fast and the Furious star Jordana Brewster. She may not be on par with the top women in Hollywood but whenever Fast and the Furious is on the tube we remember just how hot she can be.

These two would go pretty well together.

Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit Red Wings)-Jennifer Aniston

Immense success and longevity have made Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom a future Hall of Famer.

With four Stanley Cups and six Norris Trophies, he is still going strong at age 39. Talk about one of the best defenseman of all-time.

Who else could be a perfect match other than Jennifer Aniston? 10 years of golden success on the hit show "Friends" and continued success in films such as Bruce Almighty and Along Came Polly have made Aniston one of the biggest names in Hollywood.

At her peak, there was no hotter woman on the planet. At his peak, there was no other defenseman who could even touch him.

These two just have so much in common.

Ethan Moreau (Edmonton Oilers)-Uma Thurman

Now I've never been an Uma Thurman fan, but she has had quite the impressive career and is not bad to look at.

But when in comes to real Hollywood hotties, Uma is not for me.

And neither is Ethan Moreau and the Edmonton Oilers. Moreau has only reached 30 points three times, but he is a solid veteran forward.

Even bad teams need a captain right?

Well bad movies need a leading actress. My Super Ex Girl Friend? Please, both that movie and the Oilers are awful.

They fit well together.

Bryan McCabe (Florida Panthers)-A. J. Cook

Bryan McCabe is a veteran defenseman who knows how to put the puck in the net. Three straight seasons of 15 or more goals and 50 or more points between 2003-07 will tell you that.

But playing on the Maple Leafs and Panthers hasn't helped his cause when it comes to being noticed.

However, with all the years of quality service going unknown, he deserves an actress who knows what he's gone through.

Criminal Minds star A. J. Cook has had a similar career, as she has played various roles and done more than a solid job at all of them but she doesn't get talked about much.

They both bring a lot to the table but neither seem able to get over the hump and make a splash.

Maybe they can join forces?

Dustin Brown (Los Angeles Kings)-Kristen Stewart

I know a lot of my friends don't like Kristen Stewart. That is because they say she plays a poor version of some character in the Twilight movies.

Now those friends of mine would all be girls.

I, on the other hand, haven't seen Twilight and find Stewart to be the cute girl next door type which fits Kings captain Dustin Brown perfectly.

Brown, another 25-year old captain is a steady offensive producer for LA but isn't the prototypical flashy goal scorer.

The same can be said for Stewart, who has given quality performances throughout her career despite being just 19-years old.

They both work in LA, I wonder if they have met?

Mikko Koivu (Minnesota Wild)-Blake Lively

Something about young blonds making a couple. While opposites attract, keeping things consistent is always a benefit as well.

Wild captain Mikko Koivu is a young and talented centerman for Minnesota and has the potential to be one of the great stars in this league with a bit more surrounding talent.

Similarly, Gossip Girl star Blake Lively has the same type of potential and the ability to play larger roles as she gets more opportunities.

Plus, she and Mikko would just look good together.

Jason Arnott (Nashville Predators)-Jennifer Love Hewitt

Nashville captain Jason Arnott has been a model of consistency. In 11 of his 15 seasons he has registered 50 points or more. He has won a cup with New Jersey and continues to be a presence for Predators.

A counterpart for Arnott is Jennifer Love Hewitt.

The current Ghost Whisperer star has also starred in hits such as I know What You Did Last Summer and Heartbreakers.

She has been co-stars with a bunch of famous actors and has been around the block for quite some time now.

A perfect match for Arnott.

Jamie Langenbrunner (New Jersey Devils)-Mandy Moore

Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner has been around awhile and has gone through an up and down career. However, the Dallas Star has had career years in two of the last three years with 60 and 69 points.

The same can be said for singer/actress Mandy Moore. The talent has always been there but it seems hard for her to really hit the big time as an actress after coming on to the scene as another pop diva.

Both Langenbrunner and Moore have the talent to be a part of something special but only time will tell if either one will hit the big time.

Doug Weight (New York Islanders)-Rebecca Romijn

The 18-year veteran and Stanley Cup winner has no goals and just 10 assists on the season, but in his prime he was a key contributor on many different clubs.

Weight posted an 104 point season with the Oilers back on 1995-96 and won a ring with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2005-06.

But at the end of his career, Weight is starting to slow down fast, which is why he would make a good match with Rebecca Romijn.

Other than the X-Men series, Romijn hasn't been what she once was and these two could relax on a beach somewhere and reminisce over their fabulous careers.

Chris Drury (New York Rangers)-Hilary Swank

Chris Drury, a cup winner with Colorado and a consistent 50-60 point per season forward is the type of player every GM wants on his team.

He leads by example, speaks up when needed and plays solid at both ends of the ice.

He is a veteran player who has seen the glory and he needs a veteran counter part. How about Hilary Swank?

The two-time Academy Award winning actress isn't flashy, isn't the most talked about, but like Drury, she gets the job done.

Daniel Alfreddson (Ottawa Senators)-Jessica Alba

She's flashy, popular, and seems to always be heard from. But what has she really done? Has she had that signature movie? Has she made that perfect performance? Not yet. But hopefully Jessica Alba will find her signature role.

The same can be said for Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfreddson who is always making noise for highlight reel goals and productive seasons year in and year out.

He is consistently a 70-90 point scorer and leads his team with a great veteran presence, but can he win Ottawa a Stanley Cup? He almost got one a few years ago, but will he ever reach the pinnacle?

Only time will tell for these two, but they fit well together.

Mike Richards (Philadelphia Flyers)-Leighton Meester

Not even 25-years old, Flyers captain Mike Richards has already notched two 75+ point seasons in just four years at the NHL level.

He has the weapons around him to win a Stanley Cup but will he be able to deliver at such a young age?

A counterpart for this up and coming young stud would be the other Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester.

Meester has become a quick young star through her show on the CW but she hasn't broken off on to other, more prominent, roles.

Perhaps this is the year that both Richards and Meester shine brighter than their fellow young stars.

Wouldn't they look good together? I think so.

Shane Doan (Phoenix Coyotes)-Rachel McAdams

Shane Doan, another model of consistency (it must be a good trait in a captain) has scored 20 or more goals in nine straight seasons and boosted his production the last two seasons.

Before the 2007-08 season Doan had never tallied more than 68 points, but since then, he has finished with totals of 78 and 73 points.

This jump in production makes him a good comparison to Rachel McAdams, who has been a consistent actress over the last few years, but with roles in Red Eye and Sherlock Holmes, she proved she can be a true leading lady.

Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins)-Scarlett Johansson

Golden Girl for the Golden Boy of hockey. They are both flashy and know how to shine.

Sid the Kid has the hockey world on his finger now that he has won a Stanley Cup, and Scarlett Johansson is arguably the hottest blond actress out there today.

These two would simply make a dynamic power couple. However, she is three years older.

Does Sid the Kid have game off the ice as well?

Rob Blake (San Jose Sharks)-Catherine Zeta Jones

Both have had storied careers, both have won numerous awards, and both were born in 1969.

Sharks defenseman Rob Blake is one of the best defenseman to ever play the game, while Catherine Zeta Jones was one of the most sought after actresses in her prime.

I like this match.

Eric Brewer (St. Louis Blues)-Kate Beckinsale

St. Louis' 10-year veteran defenseman hasn't played on many good teams and hasn't posted much on the offensive end throughout his career.

However, he has brought steady leadership to a St. Louis blue-line that has plenty of young talent who need to be shown the way.

A perfect counter part for Brewer would be Kate Beckinsale, the soft spoken British actress who we really should hear more from, but don't.

She's hot but doesn't flaunt it and she could play any number of roles. Instead she focuses on ones that present her as a true actress and not just for her looks.

Simply said, these two vets know how to lead.

Vincent Lecavalier (Tampa Bay Lightning)-Jessica Biel

Vincent Lecavalier may have a Stanley Cup ring, but like Jessica Biel, he seems to think he can get away with pure talent.

While he is a captain, he doesn't show that consistency most teams want in a captain and because of this lack of consistency, he was unable to make the Team Canada roster for the Olympics.

Similarly, Biel has starred in various movies throughout her career, but seems to rely too much on her looks to play particular roles.

She simply cannot match the level of other actresses and the same can be said for Lecavalier, who doesn't have the all around game like other captains.

Maybe these two can get together and help push each other to perform at their very best.

Roberto Luongo (Vancouver Canucks)-Alessandra Ambrosio

When you are the only goaltender in the NHL who is a captain and your career save percentage of .919 is higher than Martin Brodeur's, you deserve a Victoria's Secret Angel.

Roberto Luongo is an absolute stud and arguably the best goaltender in the NHL. He is also the backbone of his the Canucks.

His longevity and dominant performance at his position is matched by few others.

Now what is the connection to Alessandra Ambrosio, the drop dead gorgeous angel?

Not much. I can't think of anything in terms of their careers matching other than that both are in their prime.

But I'm getting to the end of my list and I'm tired of trying to think who would make a great match.

Therefore, why not give Luongo one of the hottest women I could think of? Works for me.
