The Rock has not been in WWE since his film career exploded, the question is will he be welcomed back in WWE programming?
There is a lot of tension between some wrestling fans and Dwayne Johnson. One thing that has fueled this tension is the comments made by John Cena calling him out. Now I do understand that us marks understand that this is a publicity attempt but still meaning can be found in Cena's comments.
I think a lot of us wrestling fans would agree that the Rock has attempted to distance himself completely from pro wrestling. To me this does not make any sense given that wrestling is what propelled his carrer in the first place. Knowing the entertainment industry I have little doubt that his agents probably thought that distancing himself from anything relating to WWE was the best thing for his film career.
The truth is that probably Dwayne Johnson's career has benefited greatly from distancing himself from WWE. He is know primarily seen as a actor and his days in wrestling are very distant. Sure he has come back a few times in small promos but not to the point of being involved in any type of creative direction.
When and if the Rock does come back, which he probably will the only question left to answer us what kind of reception will he get from the hardcore wrestling fans? I think we all know that the majority of casual fans will be cheering like crazy but I am curious as to the response he will get from hardcore fans such as ourselves.
Creatively I dont think he will make a difference based on the fact that it would only be a short term deal. Of course he could help the wrestling industry by putting perhaps one younger superstar over but we all know that wont happen since he comes from a industry where image is everything. The truth is that the Rock owes it to his wrestling fans to at least show them he still remembers his roots. Of course Dwayne Johnson is going to spike up the ratings when he comes back but I sure do hope that he is able to contribute at least in some way to the industry that made him.
