According to ESPN.com , the Philadelphia Phillies have signed veteran free agent pitcher Jose Contreras to a one-year contract pending a physical exam.

Contreras, 38, went 6-13 with a 4.92 ERA last year with the Chicago White Sox and Colorado Rockies. With the Sox, he was 5-13 with a 5.42 ERA in 21 starts. With the Rox, he was 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in seven appearances (two starts).

The Phillies could handle him like they did with Chan Ho Park last year, giving Contreras an opportunity to earn the fifth spot in the rotation before sending him to the bullpen, where he'll likely end up.
