According to the Chicago Tribune, confirmed by the Chicago Sun-Times, team officials and Jonny Gomes himself, are talking about Gomes as a platoon partner for Kosuke Fukodome. Gomes a 29 year old right handed batter hit 20 home runs last year for the Cincinnatti Reds in only 281 at bats, he had 51 rbis and hit .307 vs. lefties. Jonny plays both corner outfield spots, while he is decent in left field he isn't very good defensively in right, yet neither is Dye anymore, and you have to wonder about Nady's arm after 2 tommy-john surgeries. The Cubs are still interested in Xavier Nady and Jermaine Dye as well.
Gomes hitting line last year .267/.338/.541 , Jermaine Dye's hitting line last year .250/.340/.453, Xavier Nady's line in 2008(he only played 7 games last year) .305/.357/.510! All three crush lefty pitching, all three would fill the platoon role nicely! Yet Gomes is the youngest, and isn't injury prone like Nady, is in his prime where as Dye is nearing the end of his career at 36 years old! I'm not knocking Jermaine Dye, he is a great player, and I have the utmost respect for him, I'm just saying Gomes still has some upside, and is an intriguing option to consider! I am unsure on Nady, as in regards to his arm in the outfield. As far as Nady, I feel why take a risk on him when there are other suitable options in Dye, Gomes, and Reed Johnson!
