With one of the worst special teams in the history of the NFL, the Steelers took a step today to fill the vacancy created when they fired former Special Teams Coach, Bob Ligasheski.

Al Everest, the former Special Teams Coach of the San Francisco 49ers, is expected to be hired by the Steelers, according to . He was not under contract.

Everest apparently had a difference of opinion with 49ers' Coach Mike Singletary, and he was released by the 49ers on Jan. 5. During their game against the Seattle Seahawks on Dec. 6, Everest called for a reverse when the Seahawks punted the ball. The hand off was fumbled, and the Seahawks recovered. This led to a Seahawks touchdown, and a loss for the 49ers.

Everest has a mountain to climb, as the Steelers' special teams ranked 20th in the NFL, while the 49ers ranked sixth.

Improved special teams play is a big step the Steelers need to take if they want to return to the playoffs in 2010.
