Will Shane Mosley Be Tested If Mayweather Fight Happens

Jess Matthew BeltranJan 18, 2010

It looks like the March 13 pay per view duel between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is unlikely to happen with Floyd still mum on his future opponent since demanding an Olympic style blood testing which eventually led to a fall out with Pacquiao choosing a steeper road in Joshua Clottey while Floyd is still cherry picking his opponents. A report by Lem Satterfield in boxing fan house cited that Mayweather is likely to face Mosley in May 1 because the Nevada commission has postponed consideration because there is no name opponent yet though Floyd has express that he will keep the date and will name his opponent soon. But I think with Pacquiao choosing Clottey he will have to match up a bigger and much competitive competition rather than Malignaggi and Matthew Hatton.

If a Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight happens then that would be a great match-up in terms of speed and power. It would be a breakthrough for Floyd after avoiding top opposition for such a long time. But question would be after Floyd being an advocate for Olympic blood testing would he request Shane Mosley to undergo such test? Shane Mosley has admitted taking steroids and PEDS during the Balco controversy and with both fighters under Golden boy promotions it would be the ultimate test of how sincere GBP will implement such advocacy. It was in 2008 when Zab Judah demands Shane Mosley to undergo such test and GBP headed by CEO Richard Schaefer said he will adhere to whatever the Nevada Commission demanded and will not allow Shane to be treated like a cheater but it was him who strongly recommends a random blood test during the Pacquiao negotiation. They say if you want to have a clean environment then you start with your own backyard. If GBP is really sincere about cleaning boxing free from PEDS and Steroids then they should start testing their own first. They can even demand Mosley to be tested right after the Berto fight and subject Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. rematch to random blood testing. If these would be done and I salute GBP for their genuine intentions in cleaning boxing up but I highly doubt it. They have three promotions coming with Campillo and Shumenov in January 29 then the Berto-Mosley fight the following day then Antonio Escalante will battle out with Miguel Roman this Feb.26 will these fighters will also be tested?

Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be good for boxing even though a Pacquiao showdown would be a better proposition. But main stream boxing will have a black eye once again if GBP will not imply their random blood testing on this fight. It just means that amidst their advocacy underlies a different motive. It’s all about the Benjamins right. In the other side if GBP will drop their sudden advocacy on Mayweather and Mosley fight then against Pacquiao, Floyd will have no reason if the fight doesn’t push through. “I know the people will see through their smoke screens and lies.” A statement released by Floyd blaming Pacquiao for the fall out ironically much can be said to Floyd and GBP if they continue with their hypocrisy.
