This article was inspired by a debate I had with a friend of mine. Since most top stars which have played the most part of the last are moving clubs and getting older, I decided to do a review of the top 10 players who never won the UEFA Champions League.
Also I touched base on their history and some who are likely to win it this coming decade.
Patrick Vieira was arguably the best Defensive Midfielder in the late '90s and early to mid 2000s.
Forming deadly partnerships with every single midfielder to play with him the Arsenal jersey (at least the starters) and French National team, "the ever present midfielder" won the league with Arsenal, Juventus and Inter Milan, the World Cup, and other top competitions, but didn't win the Champions League.
Pavel Nedved was once the Ballon D'or recipient in 2003 when he led Juventus to the Champions League Final. He missed the final due to suspension and his teammates failed to bring the top prize.
One of the best defenders, unbeatable on his day, he was crucial to Parma's success in the late '90s that attracted interest from top sides. He played for Inter Milan shortly before moving to Juventus.
After the scandal in Serie A, he left for Madrid and won two league titles but failed to make it past the First Knockout round of the Champions League, twice. He is also a Ballon D'or and FIFA World Player Of The Year recipient.
"Gigi" Buffon has been hailed as the best keeper of his generation, winning seven Serie A Goalkeeper of The Year Awards. Buffon was also with Parma, after impressing just like Cannavaro, he then signed for Juventus for €51.5m, a world record fee for goalkeepers.
Buffon came close in 2003 with Juventus, but faced his nemesis—penalty kicks.
He played for Ajax, Juventus and Inter Milan before joining Barcelona. he won every league title respectively. He has never won the Champions League, more surprisingly he has failed to score in the Knockout Stages of the Champions League. Although with Barcelona that could be a different story.
Owen won a treble with Liverpool in 2001 but with the then-UEFA Cup. Owen has been plagued with injuries and hasn't returned to his Liverpool form during spells with Real Madrid and Newcastle and most recently Manchester United. Owen won the Ballon D'or in 2001.
Pires was key to the Arsenal team that went unbeaten in the Barclays Premier League '03/'04 season. He was subbed in the 12th minute of the Champions League Final in 2006, that was the closest he ever got.
The second highest scorer in the Champions League with 60 goals, the most efficient in the top 10 leading scorers with 77 percent goal-to-game ratio. He made his name at Manchester United before moving to Real Madrid where he featured sporadically in the Champions League.
The farthest he has gotten in the competition to was the semifinals in 2002.
Arsenal Legend Dennis Bergkamp won all domestic trophies except the League Cup. He was part of the team that went unbeaten in the English Premier League.
Bergkamp scored 120 goals for Arsenal in 424 appearances (10th overall), and has 166 assist in his Arsenal career making his link-up play as awesome as his finishing and first touch.
Dennis Bergkamp was a player that deserved to win the Champions League.
"The Real R9"
Ronaldo is one of the best strikers of all time, three-time World Player of The Year. He won the Spanish and Dutch League with Real Madrid and PSV respectively.
He won the Spanish Cup with Barcelona and won the UEFA Cup with Inter MIlan. Ronaldo player for local rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan. He also turned out for La Liga rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid. He won the World Cup and is the record goal scorer with 14 goals in three competitions.
With such an illustrious career, he narrowly missed out when he was cup-tied in 2007, he came close in 2003 but his injury saw Madrid eliminated in the semi finals.
