New York Rangers Prospect: "I Want to be Like Malkin"

In this nice little story, Evgeny Grachev, the Rangers' third round selection in this year's draft, is already making some news. "I want to be like Malkin,” he told reporters who were eager to talk to some of the youngsters at the Madison Square Garden training facility yesterday.

Even though he's only been in the United States for approximately twelve hours, he's shown that he really likes the team and the situation, and surprisingly, shows an excellent command of the English language, something that is always welcome in a newly acquired European player.

"I am really happy with my draft, great team, great city, I really want to play in the NHL with the Rangers." Grachev told reporters yesterday. Although it's highly unlikely that this third round pick will be as good as superstar Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins, even if he turns out to be half as good, it will be a steal for the Rangers.

He was ranked ninth among European skaters at this year's draft but perhaps the Russian-factor made him slide down under the radar. This led some people to think of the Alexei Chereponov situation, as some wonder if the Rangers will ever get to see him.

But relax, because unlike Cheraponov or even Malkin for that matter, Grachev is not under contract currently with any Russian team so it will be no problem getting him to play in the United States and hopefully Ranger blue in the near future.
