During England’s one-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the Fourth ODI at the Oval, one particular incident overshadowed a nail-biting game of cricket.

Grant Elliot was run out after colliding with England bowler Ryan Sidebottom.  Both men were knocked to the ground, and England seemed to forget about the spirit of cricket and allow the injured Elliot to take the long walk back to the pavilion, much to the disgust of the Black Caps dressing room.

Umpire Benson appeared to give Skipper Paul Collingwood the option of withdrawing the appeal and doing what he knew was the right course of action.

Collingwood claimed, “I had to make a split second decision and in hindsight maybe I made the wrong one.”

In reply, opposite number Daniel Vettori apologized for any use of inappropriate language used by him and his team, but “the build up of emotion was big and when we won it had to be released.”
