This is my top 5 "Complimentary Player" of all time, consisting of a Starting 5 players that played "second best" to a star in NBA history. Obviously, Scottie Pippen's name comes to mind, but there's still some others great players.
But curious about the others player? just click the slide show then and enjoy!
C - Wilt Chamberlain in his Lakers' years - Yep he was the 2nd man or maybe the 3rd man on that Lakers team behind the "Mr Clutch" Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. What funny is when Wilt started to play more defense, outlet pass, and reduced his FGA's then he started to getting his rings. Thanks to the coach Bill Sharman who introduced Russell's game to him.
Notice how I put him as the complimentary player, yep he was all time great, however he was the complimentary player during his Lakers' years.
Yep Wilt was the complimentary player at that Lakers' team, don't get me wrong he was still good but his coach asked him not to shot as much like he used to, Wilt gladly did and as the result he got his rings. If you notice he didn't average 30 PPG in the Lakers but he still won ring, so what's better? Average 50 but won nothing or played efficient but got ring?
It doesn't mean he was a complimentary player throughout his career though, just during his Lakers' years.
PF - Kevin Mchale - At his best, he was a hell of a defender even a badass such as Barkley admitted that. Not to mention beside his defensive skill, he arguably was the best post up player of all time, with his so called worm post up moves.
SF - Scottie Pippen - Yes I all ready did mention him, but no one ever came close to him. Yes Pippen needed MJ to win his rings, but what's the point? MJ need Pippen just as bad. He was known for his versatility and his defensive skills
SG - John Havlicek - 8 rings but that's not the only reason why I put him in here. He was obviously a perfect complimentary player for Russell and his Celtics, an extraordinary player with such amazing stamina. And considering you all are basketball fans, you should know this quote "Greer is putting the ball in play. He gets it out deep and Havlicek steals it! Over to Sam Jones! Havlicek stole the ball! It's all over...It's all over! Johnny Havlicek is being mobbed by the fans! It's all over! Johnny Havlicek stole the ball!"
PG - John Stockton - No need to explain why actually, the guy has the most assists, steals in the NBA history and was a perfect teammate to Karl Malone, both were the first and the most successfull pick and roll duo.
