Patrick Marleau is no stranger when it comes to putting the puck in the net. But even he has to be surprised at the pace in which he is scoring this season.
Marleau currently leads the NHL is goals with 31, which is just seven goals shy of his season high. To say that the former captain is on fire would be an incredible understatement.
But reaching the 30 goal plateau isn’t exactly new for him.
Ever since the NHL changed the face of the game to make it a more scorer friendly league, Patrick has flourished. He has scored 30 or more goals in four of the last five seasons and this year is doing it at an astonishing 0.64 goals per game clip.
If he manages to stay injury free and can recover quickly from a possible long Olympic run, he is on pace to score 53 goals. Now wouldn’t that be something, especially in his contract year.
However, Marleau doesn’t get the press that a top scorer should receive. Hell, he isn’t even the top attention grabber on his team. Yet Patrick probably wouldn’t want to have it any other way.
No.12 speaks softly but carries an enormous stick and when paired on a line with Joe Thornton and Dany Heately, it is easy for him to get lost in the mix. Patrick allows these stars to create chaos and then does an excellent job finding open ice, getting the puck towards the net, and cleaning up any slop that the goalie may cough up.
Marleau’s lack of flash makes it easy for his accomplishments to slip through the cracks, so as a way to keep the rest of the nation informed on this dangerous scorer (and to give fans a little refresher on what Patrick has done for the Sharks this year) here are my Top 10 favorite goals by Patty so far this season
