2009 MLB Predictions: How Did I Do?

The 2010 baseball season is only a few months away, every MLB fan can't wait for the season to begin. There are still plenty of teams that are not finished this off-season.

The economy has made this one of the more quiet off-seasons. It should get louder soon. There are a bunch of players that are still without a team, and some of them may even have to accept a deal that they don't necessarily love.

When some of these players find their new teams, I am going to predict the MLB season once again. Last year, I did a division by division breakdown starting in the middle of February.

I made many predictions. Some came true, and some didn't. Some picks made me look like a genius and other made me look like a fool. I feel like I did a pretty good job with my predictions for last year.

I am writing this article now, so I can show everybody if I am a reliable source for predictions. The MLB is one of the hardest leagues to predict. Here is how I did with my predictions last year.

American League West

My Picks

1. Los Angeles Angels

2. Seattle Mariners

3. Texas Rangers

4. Oakland Athletics

What Really Happened

1. Los Angeles Angels

2. Texas Rangers

3. Seattle Mariners

4. Oakland Athletics

I was two games off from getting this division perfect. The Rangers had two more wins than the Mariners did, but they both had solid years like I predicted them to have. I also picked the Rangers as a team that could have been 2009's "Rays".  In other words, a team that can surprise people with a great season. In my book, they did.

National League West

My Picks

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

2. Arizona Diamondbacks

3. Colorado Rockies

4. San Francisco Giants

5. San Diego Padres

What Really Happened

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

2. Colorado Rockies

3. San Francisco Giants

4. San Diego Padres

5. Arizona Diamondbacks

My NL West prediction article shows that I had the D'Backs at first and the Dodgers. I put the Dodgers at first, because at the time Manny Ramirez was still a free agent. I noted that if the Dodgers are able to bring Manny back to L.A., then they should win the division. My biggest mistake with this division was that, I overestimated the D'Backs.  They had a good young team, but nothing clicked for them last year. I also picked the San Francisco Giants as a team that can be 2009's "Rays".  I believe that this division was the hardest one to predict. There was so many question marks for every team.

American League Central

My Picks

1. Minnesota Twins

2. Chicago White Sox

3. Cleveland Indians

4. Detroit Tigers

5. Kansas City Royals

What Really Happened

1. Minnesota Twins

2. Detroit Tigers

3. Chicago White Sox

Tie 4. Cleveland Indians

Tie 4. Kansas City Royals

The Twins went on to win the AL Central, but it wasn't easy. They had to play the greatest baseball of their lives, and they just edged the Tigers. The Indians were expected to be big competitors in 2009. People actually thought that I was underestimating the tribe by placing them in third. It showed that I was on the right track. I didn't think they were going to do as bad as they did , but I knew they weren't going to win the division. There was just too much talent in the AL Central.

National League Central

My Picks

1. Chicago Cubs

2. Cincinnati Reds

3. St. Louis Cardinals

4. Houston Astros

5. Milwaukee Brewers

6. Pittsburgh Pirates

What Really Happened

1. St. Louis Cardinals

2. Chicago Cubs

3. Milwaukee Brewers

4. Cincinnati Reds

5. Houston Astros

6. Pittsburgh Pirates

The Cubs looked phenomenal on paper. It seemed like they had all the right pieces to go far in the playoffs. The Cubs could never really find their groove last year, and Milton Bradley was a big part of that. I think if Bradley played good ball then the Cubs would've at least made the wild card. The move that pushed the Cardinals over the top, and to first place, was the trade for Matt Holliday. After that trade, it was clear that the Cardinals were going to seriously contend for the rest of the year. I would like to point out that I predicted a not so bad year for the Reds. I saw a nice young team, and they are still improving. The NL Central should be very interesting this year.

American League East

My Picks

1. New York Yankees

2. Boston Red Sox

3. Tampa Bay Rays

4. Baltimore Orioles

5. Toronto Blue Jays

What Really Happened

1. New York Yankees

2. Boston Red Sox

3. Tampa Bay Rays

4. Toronto Blue Jays

5. Baltimore Orioles

This division was really easy for me to predict. Everyone knew that the Jays and O's were going to be the bottom two, and that the Rays would fall just short behind the Red Sox and Yankees. The Yankees were too good to be true, and I didn't underestimate them at all.  I was surprised to see the amount of people that didn't believe that the Yankees could win the AL East. They had all the pieces to do it, and they did do it.

National League East

My Picks

1. New York Mets

2. Philadelphia Phillies

3. Atlanta Braves

4. Florida Marlins

5. Washington Nationals

What Really Happened

1. Philadelphia Phillies

2. Florida Marlins

3. Atlanta Braves

4. New York Mets

5. Washington Nationals

I still believe that the Mets could've won this division if they stayed healthy. Everything just came apart. The Marlins and Braves showed that they got a lot of talent, and the Nationals showed that they are a young team that will continue to get better. The Phillies won the division for the third straight year, and made it to the World Series for the second straight year. This is going to be the most unpredictable division for the upcoming year.

American League Wild Card

My Pick

Boston Red Sox

What Really Happened

Boston Red Sox

National League Wild Card

My Pick

Philadelphia Phillies

What Really Happened

Colorado Rockies

World Series Winner

New York Mets or New York Yankees

What Really Happened

New York Yankees won over Philadelphia Phillies

I strongly believed that the Mets and Yankees were going to square off in the World Series in 2009. As we all know, that didn't happen. The Yanks played the Phillies and won the Fall Classic. I had no doubts that the New York Yankees were going to go far into the playoffs. They just had too good a team, and they showed that.

Overall, I think I did a pretty good job with my predictions. I picked the right winner for each division four out of six times. I also picked the American League Wild Card winner, and the World Series winner. If that impressed you, then take a look at my 2010 MLB Predictions. They should  be coming up no later than February 20.
