I consider myself an empathetic fellow. I can put myself in somebody else's moccasins and see something from his or her point of view.
But I can't for the life of me see why anybody thinks we should dump him.
List of reasons to not keep Campbell:
- He's not Peyton Manning
List of reasons to keep Campbell:
- He's competent at worst, very good at best
- He's not a distraction
- He's humble
- He put up decent numbers this past year
- He's a fighter who never gets down on himself
- He's Nos. 1 through 5 even though he doesn't have to be. He had maybe the worst and most vulnerable offensive line in the NFL! Don't forget, people, that at least half of a quarterback's success is based on the performance of the offensive line.
- He won't be a rookie next year
- He's used to changing offenses
- He's smart, physical, and a trusted leader
Who could the
Redskins bring in next year that would have a shot at being better than Campbell? If you even mention the words "Clausen" or "Bradford" or "McCoy", I'll stick my fingers in my ear and say "la la la la la."
Michael Vick? Please. I love his redemption story, but I'm baffled how anyone's under the illusion that he has what it takes to be a competent passer.
The only player who raises even a discussion is free agent Chad Pennington. But I'd still rather have Campbell and build him an offensive line. Campbell is a known quantity, and he's earned his teammates' trust already.
The sad thing is, my internal BS detector is telling me that I shouldn't expect Campbell to be back next year.
Most people know this. He's not flashy and thrilling the way a rookie is, so Snyder will probably push Allen into picking Bradford. But that's just my intuition and experience with Snyder speaking. There's still a fraction of a chance that Allen will do the right thing and avoid Snyder's interference, but I don't count on it at this point.
Really, there's a clear course of action here: The best quarterback you can get right now is Jason Campbell with a bolstered offensive line. Use your first draft pick to take the best available lineman. Even if there's a more talented receiver or whatever on the board, even if the next best lineman available is projected to be a tenth or fifteenth overall pick, use that fourth pick on a lineman. And then maybe two or three more draft picks on linemen.
Use your uncapped budget to bring in whatever young stud linemen you can (though there won't be many in free agency). Then maybe Campbell won't be forced to release the ball in a second and a half and can start hitting receivers. A Shanahan running game promises to open up the rest of the field a little bit.
But whatever the Redskins do, I hope they don't get a new QB. We have a completely serviceable, decent one right now, and there's far from a guarantee we could get one who'd be immediately more valuable. Rookies historically take about three years to develop, and there's no point in taking that delayed risk right now.
