Here is Part 2 of a 2 article series that gives us Raider faithfuls a chance to vent our frustrations after another losing season.
Many would have you believe that this organization is so far off that they need to"blow up the building and start completely over".
I,like Cable, don't believe that is the case.
Many are already saying that Cable is as good as gone. This is a trend that doesn't work and hasn't worked for the last 7 years.Players need a confident coach who believes in his players. They need a system they can perfect and be able to add "new wrinkles".
Sometimes it takes a Rookie or even a second year player time to perfect the scheme and having new coaches and new systems each year pushes you back to square one.
I don't think Tom Cable has really had the time in his first year to really change anything being he took over for Lane Kiffin partially through the season.
He has the team's backing and they believe Cable can get them to the playoffs next year.
One things is for sure though and that is there are things that need fixed. That brings me to the beginning to my slide show.
We currently have 3 QB's on the roster and someone has to go.Many want that person to be JaMarcus Russell to be cut or traded. It pains my to say this, but I think Al Davis will keep Russell. Why?Al hates to be wrong. He may think somehow,he may develop into the QB we all wanted him to be.I am hoping Al at least has the sense to restructure his contract if he does still tries to take that challenge, because let's face it,he's miles away from being a caliber QB.
Bruce on the other hand, has gained the teams/coaches respect by 1st off,his work ethic,2nd his play on the field, and 3rd his confidence in himself and his teammates.I just wonder,if he started the season,if we could have been in the playoffs competing?I think so.
The Raiders should sign this young gun to at least a 2 year contract.
Bruce got a taste of bigger things to come next season and is very "Hungry" for more.I like this kid and he brings it every game.
Charlie Frye rode pine all season up until the Browns game.Although he had 3 turnovers that game,he showed that he could move the team and complete passes. The next game he corrected his mistakes by passing the ball where the defenders could not intercept it.He also showed (again) that he could move the ball downfield.Frye displayed in that last game a toughness by getting sacked, battered and bruised by a very good Ravens D.He lasted until right before the half and would not return.Frye proved 2 things for the Raiders.1.The QB can move the ball even with a shaky O-line.2.Passes can be completed, but it takes good ball placement, something JaMarcus can't do ....yet.
I wouldn't mind if Charlie Frye gets resigned as a 2nd or 3rd string back-up.
I wouldn't mind either if they cut JaMarcus and sign another "mobile" QB,such as Troy Smith. He is another "hungry" QB who wants to start in this league and Cable loves for his players to compete.
Our Offensive line is a major need that needs addressed this off-season more than any other on the team.To think what could have been if it weren't for false starts, holding calls, and missed blocks.Cornell Green (pictured here) is the biggest culprit of them all.He is absolutely horrible on pass blocking.I think he is good at run blocking, but to be a good right tackle, you must be good at both.Cable must look to Free Agency to find a good all around right tackle for this team to compete and not be put in 1st and 15 situations all the time.
Cooper Carlisle is another who is on the right side of the Offensive line (Right Guard)who also could and should be replaced. He is at the end of his career and is not producing like he should.I think even a draft pick would work here, but free agency wouldn't hurt either.
Samson Sateale is a small center who took over for Jake Grove last year.He started the year off terrible having been replaced by Chris Morris. He finally earned that position back and improved his play as the year went on.I'm not sold on Samson and would consider a larger center for the job.The Raiders should maybe look in the later rounds of the 2010 draft to create better competition at that position.
Robert Gallery is a solid left guard, but he's been plagued by injuries.Let's hope he can stay injury free for 2010.
Chris Morris did a great job filling in wherever needed this year. The Raiders need to keep this kid on the roster, because he knows and performs well when asked to.
Mario Henederson is still a little suspect to me.I've seen way too many plays in which he's gotten beat.I still think he needs to be on the roster, but he has to work hard on this off-season and improve his pass blocking. He's done a way better job than Kwame Harris, but much improvement is needed still.
I still say to keep all three.I don't think we should trade any one of them.
Michael bush should be the featured running back with Justin Fargas as a fill in for breathers. When running the ball, the object is to wear down your opponent and to gain yards, who better that the bruising Bush?Fargas is also a hard runner and when Bush busts off a big run and Fargas comes in,what better than another hard runner as another option?
Darren MacFadden was used as a between the tackles type runner at the 1st half of the season, wrong.
He is not that type of running back.Cable started to use him the way they should, which is around the edge type.Cable also used him as a slot receiver and he did an excellent job in doing so.He showed great hands and of course, great burst of speed.I think Cable finally found out that it works for him that way and will use that next year more.
Zach Miller should have been in the pro bowl this year.He would have if it weren't for certain bad QB play.He continues to get better and better every year.Zach leads all the wide receivers in receptions and yards.
Brandon Myers is also a good second tight end, having a good rookie year when called upon. His blocking has been good also.
Tony Stewart is also a good receiving threat and has been ok on blocking.
There is no needs here.
Chaz Schilens has been our number 1 receiver when he is not hurt, but because of his injuries Louis Murphy has taken over that role leading the team of wide receivers with 521 yards and 4 td's.
If Chaz were to have another injury riddled year next year,I'm afraid we would have to consider looking for another to fill his spot.Injuries do happen, but when they hinder you each and every year, you got to question whether the player is really worth the risk.
Louis Murphy has had a great 1st year as a rookie and we can only expect his play to get better and better. When he was drafted,I knew this kid was going to preform this year.
Johnnie Lee Higgins hasn't shown any improvement to me what so ever.In fact,I think he regressed.Being his 3rd year, you would think there would be improvement on catching the ball, route running, and being able to get separation. Not the case, his future should be in doubt and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets cut in the off-season.
Darrius Heyward-Bey has had a very rough 1st year. This rookie has been criticized and slandered even before he caught a pass in the NFL.He's had to try and make something of himself from a QB who has had minimal accuracy, pocket awareness,or time to throw. The key to him improving is going to be a good off-season,better QB play and most of all,a Offensive line to give the QB time to get it to him.The 1st part of the season,I saw the rookie being double teamed. That alone makes it hard for any rookie to be successful.Look for Darrius to have a big year this year. He's a hard worker in the off-season and i see a bright future ahead of him.
Gary Russell has been a good fill in at Fullback and as a KR,but I'm not convinced he's a starter at those positions.
We started with Lorenzo Neal and he got cut. Then we gave Oren O'Neal the starting position and then he got hurt again for the second year in a row.
As much as I love Oren O'Neal, his health is in question. He is listed on IR on the teams roster.
Luke Lawton has also been in a fill in role as Fullback, but has recently tested positive for steroids and has since then ,suspended.
This is a position that is a big need.If Oren can come back from his injury, then I say keep him on the roster.
I'm not sold on either Lawton or Russell being our Fullbacks, one has to go and the other being a backup.
I think we should scout a legitimate fullback this off-season.
It will(along with a better O-line)greatly improve our running game, which is desperately needed.
This concludes Part 2 of the offense,so look for Part 3 The Defense.
Don't forget to tell what you think and leave a comment.
