What's College Football's Best Conference?: OOC Games Vs. BCS Opponents Analysis

I’ve conducted an analysis of the BCS conferences' performance versus out of conference (OOC) BCS opposition since the 2004 season, comparing such teams against the Mountain West in order to answer the question, “Is the Mountain West significantly weaker than the six BCS conferences?”

The analysis incorporated Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Miami into the ACC and Cincinnati, Louisville, and South Florida into the Big East from 2004 for simplicity’s sake; if I had broken them out the results would not have varied much.

Seasons back to 2004 were incorporated in order to give a big enough sample for meaningful results from a statistical standpoint; as any statistician can tell you, one season does not make an analysis due to effects of variance on the numerical model.

That is a fancy way of saying that any conference can have one really good or bad season (or outlier); having several seasons allows the results to regress to the mean.
