The 2009 NFL season has been full of plenty of surprises, but one of them has not been the consist play of the top quarterbacks in the league. As rookies come establish names for themselves in the league, the veterans quarterbacks are still doing what they do best, dominating defenses and leading their respected teams into the playoffs. This year brought the continued success of Phillip Rivers leading his team to 11 wins in a row, along with 5th   in the league in passing yards, and yet he is not the prime candidate to win the MVP award. He finishes sixth in MVP voting in my perspective. After him comes someone named Aaron Rodgers who had the most to prove and has done so, in an extremely convincing manner. Even though he was sacked 50 times he still managed to throw for 4400 yards, and had a 30 to 7 td to int ratio. After suffering a devastating loss to the Vikings in Lambeau Field and watching the former pride and spirit of the Packer organization come in and defeat him, in the stadium in which now Mr. Rodgers calls home, Rodgers must still feel the sting. He might be more motivated then anyone else to advance in playoffs, to erase the seasons few poor memories, leaving him 5th in the MVP race. Chris Johnson is next on the list making him fourth, after rushing for 2006 yards and 14 touchdowns; he certainly earned his way to the middle of this list with help of Vince Young and his reemergence. But there is a reason why Chris Johnson is on the list he rushed for more then a 100 yards in 12 games this year, and ended the season with 10 games in a row with over a 100 yards, one would have a hard time arguing against these numbers any year, but this NFL season isn’t just like any other year, there was a sprinkle of magic in the air throughout the season. The top three candidates have lead their teams to first round byes in the playoffs each in their own unique way. Peyton Manning, is there any thing else needed to say besides his name?? The man has been dominating pass defenses for several seasons now and it has become just an excepted occurrence. In the last 3 seasons he has lead his team to a 38 -10 record which is unbelievable.  Finishing the season with a 31 to 14 Td to int ration and just over 4000 yards, Manning has proved that no matter who his targets are his accuracy and decision making skills will put his team over the top. This puts Peyton at number three. The last two quarterbacks remaining both had seasons to remember, Drew Brees has just finished the season with a completion percentage just north of 70 % which is surreal, but apparently doable, he was on his way to leading the Saints to an undefeated season till they ran into a road block when the resurging Cowboys came to down and capitalized on their mistakes and handed them their first lost of the season. Saints ended the season 13-3, and Brees ended the season with 34 to 11 td to int ration and almost 4300 yards. He had some of the most breathe taking plays this season but I believe there is only one man who is more deserving of the title of league MVP more then Drew Brees, and his name has become more common households then the name of the President. Brett Lorenzo Favre has shown everyone in the league that all that media hoopla was a bunch of garbage and that he returned to the NFL for one reason and one reason only, and that is because he loves the game too much. Some like to call the engagement of the Vikings and the Favre similar to one of a man and women getting engaged, helping each other reach their ultimate dream of becoming champions! Favre started of with a summer fling with the Vikings teasing all with the appetizing idea of possibly being in a purple uniform in the 2009 season. And after all the flirting and drama that surrounded the diva, around his house or the high school near by, Coach Brad Childress did enough convincing to get him to arrive on time for the wedding just in time to over come his cold feet, and boy was the honey moon sweet. The Vikings started the season off 6-0 in which Favre had a 12 to 1 td to int ratio, and also in these first 6 games, Favre arguably had one of the most memorable play of his career when he heaved the football 40 yards down the field as he got knocked to the floor while time expired to the corner of the end zone where he connected with new signed Greg Lewis for a touchdown that might of send the 49ers season down the drain. After some more drama between coach and quarterback Favre ended the season with a 33 to 7 td to int ratio along with 4200 yards of passing one touchdown shy of the league leader(Drew Brees). If that wasn’t enough for someone who turned forty earlier this season, he ended the season with a passer rating higher then 100 for the first time in his career. Now that is saying something when one of the oldest guys in the league can literally come off the street miss of all the offseason activities and show up in time for preseason, and leads his life long rivals to a 12- 4 record, I think anyone can agree Brett Favre has been single handling the most valuable player to his team this season. And if you still have some trouble agreeing with this, here some more reason to believe under Childress the Vikings went from 6-10 to 8-8 to 10-6 and finally when Favre came into the picture he helped the Vikings reach a 12-4 mark, and finally put them into the elite category of the top 3 teams in the NFL going forward in the playoffs. Also he completed 40 passes to 6 different receivers throughout the season. If after all this you still are not convinced that Brett should get a break at the age of forty, here is some more food for thought, when playing against the NFC North this season Favre has a 15 to 0 td to int ratio averaging 288 yards per game, now that’s dominating a division in style if you ask me.
