Cut 'em, trade 'em, release 'em. Thats the advice my FATHER has for the Vikings. He's referring to yes, "Purple Jesus." A.K.A. All Day A.K.A. A.P. A.K.A. the best running back in the N.F.L. right?
Of course thats a ridiculous, half joking statement by a long time Minnesota Vikings fan. But in all honesty there is a good number of fans(even Vikings fans) that are a little fed up with number 28 and want to know whats really going on here? Now, if you are a fantasy owner in a heavy touchdown league you're wondering what the hell is this guy talking about, he led the league in T.D.'s! So please, read on.
Now, its no secret that Mr. Peterson has a little more then a case of butterfingers. The dude couldn't hold on to the pigskin if it was taped to him. F.Y.I he leads the league in fumbles (yes and fumbles lost...) since his rookie year in '07. Oh yes his rookie year who could forget. 296 rushing yards against a usually good to great San Diego Charger football team. Yeah, that was the all time record. He also went on to lead his conference in rushing yards....as a rook! Minnesota fans were blessed with a steal in the draft who seemed to dazzle us all with his amazing game changing T.D. runs. This kid was on sportscenter almost as much as Scott Van Pelt that year. Sorry for getting a little sidetracked there so now its back to the topic.
Before I start ripping this amazing athletic specimen lets give him the credit he deserves. As you read during the sidetrack he has the single game all time rushing record(thats pretty good), offensive R.O.Y, Pro bowl MVP, rushing title in '08, and of course plenty of those amazing plays we all love. However, with the emergence this year of speed demon Chris "Im faster than Usain Bolt" Johnson the spotlight has been taken away from the beloved Minnesota running back. Heres why:
He rushed for three, yes, 1, 2, and 3 100 yard games this year. Two of those games were against the suddenly hot Cleveland Browns and the not so ever hot Detroit Lions. Even if the team is winning that still isn't getting it done.
His yards per attempt dipped down from his career average of 5.2 to 4.4 this year. And to put 4.4 in perspective that was good enough for 26th in the NFL. Nuff said.
His highlights suddenly dissapeared. Granted this had a lot to do with the Soap Opera himself, Brett Favre. However, besides arguably his best T.D. run of his career against those Cleveland Browns, his next longest touchdown run of this season was one yard BELOW his number! (thats 27 for the packer fans who couldn't figure it out)
As boomer would say: not 1 not 2 not 3 not etc.... 6 fumbles lost this year! There is no reasonable excuse for this at all, you must hold on to the ball. Even if you are a household name. This might get you in a highlight though which still isn't a good thing.
Im sorry if you may have thought this was an article praising the other great number 28 but its really not. I'm even more sorry that I am not going to try and be an analyst/phsycic to actually know why Adrians' game has declined. I've heard it all from the offensive line to hes not a patient enough runner. Any of those things could be true, but the bottom line is Peterson is the only one that knows whats going wrong and what he needs to do to reclaim his spotlight for best running back in the league. Maybe we just gave away the icon for the NFL a little too early....
