It’s been a long two decades for the SMU Mustangs.  Since their pre-death penalty run of success in the early 1980s, SMU has gone without a postseason appearance since 1984, when they finished up a five-year run in the national spotlight.

After going 5-6 and 6-6 in 2005 and 2006 and just missing out on that elusive winning season and bowl game, it looked like 2007 could’ve been a big year.  Instead, it was a big disappointment, as the Mustangs went 1-11 and winless in at 0-8.

Even though six of those losses were by 10 points or less, it wasn’t enough to keep Phil Bennett on the sidelines, as his tenure came to an end after six seasons.

But there’s reason for optimism in Dallas, as the Mustangs have a new head coach in June Jones, who turned Hawai'i from an also-ran into a premier program.  Will he be able to do the same with SMU?

  1. I HIGHLY DOUBT that SMU will EVER make the POSTSEASON... with June Jones as its head coach. It ALL STARTS WITH ATTITUTE... and in my opinion, June Jones has a BAD ATTITUDE :)

Here is EVIDENCE of June Jones' BAD ATTITUDE:

    "Sept. 8: No. 20 Hawaii 45, Louisiana Tech 44

Hawaii had many close calls on its slate in 2007, but none was closer than its game in Ruston. Hawaii needed overtime to defeat head coach Derek Dooley’s upstart Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

In a decision reminiscent of Boise State’s in the Fiesta Bowl, Tech decided to go for two in the first overtime, figuring it would be next to impossible to keep Colt Brennan from scoring again. The conversion pass was deflected and the Warriors escaped."

  2. Jimson, that is the worst logic I have ever seen, and I follow presidential politics, so I've seen some pretty poor logic. I don't see any point in your so-called evidence where there was even the slightest hint of reason to believe June Jones has a bad attitude. I've been around SMU football for awhile and I have no doubt SMU will return to the postseason with Jones. Maybe not first year, but eventually. Heck, I witnessed us come very close to the postseason with Phil Bennett, and he isn't near the coach June Jones is. June took a nobody Hawaii squad and led them to the Sugar Bowl. Now, he has a real recruiting budget and good facilities and an attractive place to recruit to (Dallas), so there is no reason to believe he can't win 7 games. I'm not expecting national titles, but its silly to argue against postseason berths.

  3. BCS! BCS! BCS!

    GO MUSTANGS!!!!!
