What The Seahawks Need To Do To Restore Life

Luke JustenJan 3, 2010

Okay, so what do the Seattle Seahawks need to do to restore life into their team, their fans and into the franchise? I've broken down position by position on who Seattle should start, sign and draft for next season on their way back to the top. They can only go up from here as they've hit rock bottom this season. Some of you may agree or disagree so leave a comment if you do or don't and I'll do my best to reply. I'm not going to break down the staff on this article, but I may do another one about Jim Mora and his horrible Offensive Coordinator another time. Now, let's begin shall we?

Quarterback – Jason Campbell

With Matt Hasselbeck getting older, Seattle needs a new, young but good QB he can start immediately. And with Matt’s recent display of form which has been heavily below average, Seattle doesn’t need to waste one of their two first round Draft Picks on drafting a QB he won’t start till another three years. Jason Campbell could be a very attractive option for a lot of teams without a solid Quarterback on the Free Agency this Off-Season. I’d highly recommend Seahawks sign this lad.

Runningback – Julius Jones

I’d start Julius Jones one more season, just to see what they can get out of him before his contract expires. But if Jones is going to start, they need to comfort him with a good O-Line. Otherwise, the Running Game will be inconsistent like this season. Seattle should resign Justin Forsett too, as he expires; keep him as the 3rd Down Back and have him split carries with Julius like they did towards the end of this season.

Wide Receiver – The Seahawks still have TJ Houshmandzadeh who is a decent Number 1 option but lacked this year because of Quarterback Productivity. Matt Hasselbeck has struggled to get into rhythm all season and as much as I’d like to see the Seahawks sign Brandon Marshall, it’s highly unlikely. Plus, I don’t think Housh would be very happy about being slotted down to the Number 2 option. Deion Branch is likely to be let go, which the Seahawks can cheer about as his a waste of money and has not performed up to standard. Houshmandzadeh and Nate Burleson are the likely receivers to start, with maybe picking off someone like Davone Bess off Free Agency to put at slot receiver or move 1st year wide out Deon Butler to slot receiver as he has blinding speed.

Tight End – John Carlson

The young Tight End out of Notre Dame has had another impressive season; just falling short of making Pro Bowl. He’ll be the starting Tight End next season, no doubt.

Offensive Line – Good lord, where to start… Well Seahawks should start by drafting Tackle Russell Okung in the draft to start rebuilding their line. There’s a good chance Walter Jones may be back next season, no one knows how effective he’ll be though. Rob Sims has been a right spot this season, as has Max Unger who has recently been shifted to Center. Sean Locklear and Chris Spencer appear to be out of a job at the ‘Hawks next season which should create some cap room to sign Logan Mankins off the Free Agency, one of the Patriots Offensive Guards’. So the line could look something like this for next season… Walter Jones, Rob Sims, Max Unger, Logan Mankins, Russell Okung. That would be a beast-like line in my opinion.

Defensive Line – Another area Seattle need to work on. Number 1, get rid of Patrick Kearney. He’s taking up a lot of cap room and also his been un-productive. He still has value though, so I just trying to trade him. Richard Seymour is coming off contract, he could be a great buy, and also so is Ray Edwards who has had a season-breakout. Two new defensive ends right there, if you can only get one we still have formidable back ups in Daryl Tapp and rising playmaker, Nick Reed. Now to Nose Tackle, well they probably won’t have a draft pick high enough to get someone like Nmandakong Suh or whatever the fuck his name is, but there are some decent Nose Tackles’ on Free Agency such as Tony Brown or Casey Hampton, but he is probably out of Seattle’s price range.

Linebacker Core – Don’t change anything here. You have four elite linebackers in Lofa Tatupu, Aaron Curry, Leroy Hill and David Hawthorne who was snubbed for Pro Bowl this year. Use the 3-4 defensive formation a lot, nuff said.

Secondary – Our Safeties are fine in Deon Grant and Jordan Babineaux. They’re very productive and aggressive and have good hands for Interceptions. Our Cornerbacks need to be changed though, Marcus Trufant needs to go. Kelly Jennings will be released. Not sure about Ken Lucas’ future. Josh Wilson is a good up and coming CB but not a starter. There’s only one good CB in this year’s draft and that’s Joe Haden. Seattle will need to trade up to get him, but they can trade up with players such as Patrick Kearney and Deion Branch who still have value.

This was basically just to see what everyone else thinks, I’m open to all opinions and I will most likely respond to all replies. Thanks for taking the time to read.
