Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News is reporting that the Mets have yet to speak to FA right-hander Pineiro, although he does remain an option. Pineiro is said to be seeking a 3 year, $30 million contract. Last week, Buster Olney said that Pineiro was the Mets top starting pitching option.
Also a team official has shot down the rumor that the Mets were close to a 2 year contract with FA catcher Bengie Molina. The Mets would sign Molina to a 1 year deal with a vesting option, but the 35 year old catcher is seeking 3 years.
After being called the Mets top pitching option by Olney, I find it funny that the Mets have yet to talk to him. Although he remains an option, I think his price tag is too high. I could still see the Mets signing Pineiro, just not for what he’s looking for.
It also looks like the Bengie Molina was false. The official just sternly said “Not true”, regarding the rumored 2 year deal that was reportedly close to happening. It’s really laughable that a 35 year old catcher who is clearly on the decline with no suitors is seeking a 3 year deal. At this point, if I was Molina, I would take that 1 year deal with the vesting option before the Mets sign a guy like Torrealba now that Rockies have inked Olivio.
