Jay Bouwmeester has been the Florida Panthers' most steady defenseman over the last three seasons, not missing a game.
Now that the re-signing period is close to ending, it is paramount that Panthers General Manager Jacques Martin puts him under a new contract.
The Panthers' defenseman enjoyed his most productive scoring season last year, as he tallied 15 goals. Losing Bouwmeester would be a tough blow for Florida to take. He is the most capable puck-moving defenseman on the Panther's blueline.
Bouwmeester is a restricted free agent. This gives Panther's GM Jacques Martin a chance to match any offers made by other teams.
Martin has said in the past that he will meet with Bouwmeester and negotiate his contract. There is a definite sense among the media that Bouwmeester does not want to re-sign before his contract expires next summer.
There is no doubt that if Bouwmeester becomes a free agent, many teams will be interested. It's gut check time for Martin. What will he do?

He's gone. he's not re-signing. That's why the Panthers loaded-up on DMen.
Martin actually asked for Dion Phenuf for Joikinen. He's nuts. Phenuf is probably the best all-around dman in NHL and he's only 22.

Hopefully we get back a a guy with the fire power of a Kopitar for Bouwmeester.

The Leafs have to go after him, or Rick Nash.
