Did anyone know who Daryl Thompson was before today's game against the New York Yankees? I don't think so.
Today he pitched five innings allowing four hits, four walks and throwing two strikeouts. He pitched against Dan Giese which marked the first match-up of pitchers making their first major league start at Yankee Stadium since Boston’s Tony Welzer faced New York’s Myles Thompson on April 22, 1926.
Daryl Thompson was taken in the eighth round by the now defunct Montreal Expos in 2003.
The Reds traded Austin Kearns, Felipe Lopez and Ryan Wagner to the Washington Nationals for Thompson, Bill Bray, Royce Clayton, Brendan Harris, and Gary Majewski in 2006.
Thompson rapidly made his way up the Reds farm system. His made his way on to the Reds AAA team, the Louisville Bats, where he won three of his first four starts.
The Reds knew he had a bright future, when they traded for him in 2006. He compiled a 2.22 E.R.A. in the minors and was called up to the Reds yesterday.
They called him up because former first-round pick Homer Bailey is struggling and has a 0-3 record in three starts.
He could make the Reds a much better team down the road. They really struggled this season, but maybe in the future they will improve.
They already have pitchers Aaron Harang (30), Bronson Arroyo (31), Johnny Cueto (22), Edinson Vólquez (25), and now Daryl Thompson (22).
He surprised everyone, especially the people in New York.
Go Reds!
