Sometimes there are times where there are things I feel I need to address. Today, I feel the need to take something to task. Here is what I'm referring to:

Via NY Daily News:.

In a Sports Illustrated survey of 495 Major League Baseball players in its June 23 issue, Derek Jeter was voted the most overrated with 10% of the vote. Struggling Giants left-hander Barry Zito was second at 9%, while Alex Rodriguez and Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew were tied for third with 7%. Mets third baseman David Wright and Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis tied for fourth at 4%.

Now how in the world is Jeter overrated? Sure, he doesn't deserve to be paid $18 million, but neither does anyone else for that matter. So how else is he overrated? ......

  1. Both of the first two on that list are more underrated than overrated. Jeter is year in and year out the most important player to the Yankees and Barry Bonds holds both of the two most heralded records in all of sports. Noone has done that since Babe Ruth and he is still a living legend to this day. Bonds gets no love whatsoever. A-Rod is by far the most overrated.

  2. I'm a Yankees fan, and I am here to say that Jeter is extremely overrated lol. He's a great player, and I love the guy, but he's just not that good anymore. His defense is sub-par and besides hitting for a good average, does nothing on the offensive side. He is clutch and knows how to win, but he's not the same anymore.

  3. I don't see how you can say this guy isn't overrated! He's being paid 20 million a year to underperform! His offensive numbers are horrible this year!

  4. There's a difference between being overpaid and being overrated. I do agree with him being overpay but never overrated. Go and ask GM's around any sport league if they would be willing to go and pay for a player who knows how to win, who bring leadership and that goes out there and gives it all night in and night out. Sure there are players who might hit better or defend better, but leader qualities, grittiness and passion isnt inside of everyone.

  5. Sorry, but a 20 million dollar leader shouldn't be hitting .276 with 4 HRs.

  6. I am a huge yankees fan, so I guess you have to take whatever I say with a pinch of salt, but I firmly believe Arod and Jeter are both OVERPAID, but NOT OVERRATED. Sure, Jeter is having a bad year this year. But, he is always hitting for average and stealing bases doing the little things. His defense of course is subpar, but we know that.

As for hitting 4 hrs? Everyone knows he isn;t a power hitter. That's not what he's paid to do. He's paid to win games, which he's done over the course of his career. He is certainly not the most overrated player in baseball considering he has four rings and due to the fact that he is still better than at least 80 percent of shortstops in the league.

As for arod, are you kidding me? He is obviously overpaid, considering no one deserves the money he gets (at least in the sporting world). But, he may go down as the greatest hitter of all time. He is the best hitter in baseball along with Pujols and Chipper Jones (yes chipper). To say he is "overrated" when, in his "terrible" year in 04 when he .286, had 106 runs, 112 rbi and 36 hrs, he still hit better than 90% of baseball players, is downright pathetic.

And, even as a Yankees fan, I have to say Kevin Youkilis does not deserve to be there either. He has actually been underrated for quite some time building up to this year, and is still, for the most part, underappreciated around the league.

  7. I have to agree with Nikil on all the points he brought up. As i stated in the article...NO ONE deserves to be paid 18 million a year. And he's paid to lead the Yanks to the postseason, not to hit 55 HR or drive in 130 RBI.

  8. The majority of professional athletes are grossly overpaid, no doubt. However, Jeter is a gamer and a winner. He's having an off year but he'll bounce back. He's CURRENTLY slightly overrated as far as top shortstops go in the league but overall, no.

He's does more than just play the game of baseball, he also teaches the younger players how to play and more importantly, how to win. No player is worth this kind of money however, Jeter makes tons of contributions that people don't see with helping out younger players and the leadership he carries in the locker room.
