Portugal vs. Germany

Portugal, over the years, has become one of the major threats in soccer tournaments and this year was no exception. Portugal won their group and made into the quarterfinals with almost no trouble. With Portugal already in the quarterfinals, they waited and watched to see their opponents (Germany) score the winning goal to propel them into the second round.

Germany with their big free kick goal scored them a quarterfinals place against Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side. All Germany had to do was practice. Portugal saw Germany as a threat but they surely knew that if they beat them that they had a good chance going to the semi- finals against either Croatia or Turkey.

Portugal had set their sights on the finals, but it not meant to be. Even though they trained hard in order to compete with the Germans. Their training was not enough and despite their best efforts, they lost 3-2. By eliminating, the Portuguese Germany knocked out one of the biggest threats in the tournament and might have the best chance to go to the finals.

For me this was a big disappointment. I wanted Portugal to win but you have to take it one game at a time. Portugal with great players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Simao made them a potential winner. Portugal's lack of defending gave Germany the victory.

Germany became the better team in this one and might even play a rematch against their Group B nemesis Croatia whom they had lost to with a score of 2-1. I am going to watch Croatia and Turkey and see if either is ready to face Germany. The Fanatic is done here but stay tuned for more Euro 2008 action.
