Where Are The Giants Going?

The Giants still have more questions than answers at this point. So let's start with the questions. Do the Giants want to be a Contender or a pretender? They obviously have an elite core pitching staff. So what are Sabean and the Bowtie going to do to ensure that this pitching staff does not get wasted the next 4-5 years? Because their time is now. You can predict how long Lincecum, Cain, Zito, Sanchez and Bumgarner are going to be healthy.

It amazes me that so far the Giants offseason has consisted of letting their second or third best pitcher sign with St. Louis, and their third best hitter hit free agency. Why couldn't the Giants have signed Penny for 2 yrs. at $14M? Wasn't it just three years ago that he was the ace for the Dodgers and earlier this decade he was winning a World Series with Florida? What else did the brass need to see out of him last year to realize he was a great fit at AT&T?

Obviously Renteria has little left in the tank. Whether you say he's lost his range or his stroke, he's certainly in decline. So why not bring back Uribe, who for stretches was the Giant's best player! He would jump at a 2 yr. $10M contract with a vesting option with a minimum AB requirement. Let him spell Sanchez at second and split time with Renteria at SS. If Uribe allowed Freddy to stay healthy and we got spurts out of Renteria, it's a win-win-win.

Now you've got your core plus some insurance coming back next year. It makes your free agent moves a lot easier. Sabean goes after a LF and 1B. The problem is that the Giants management wants us to believe that they can't afford to stretch the payroll to $130M. I call bull! The Giants play in a top 5 market and their revenue was $196M last year. We deserve a winning product and are tired of hearing about how the Zito and Rowand contracts are holding us back from making any big moves. News Flash: We Giants fans don't care, we want to see a Contender!!

The good news is there is still time to pull off an Uggla trade, and sign either Damon to play LF and leadoff or step up and pay Bay. We don't want to see Derosa or some other declining veteran. What do you think the Giants need to do?
