College Football Bowl Predictions: Expert Pick'em

The 2009 Cotton Bowl was a phenomenon matchup between the seventh ranked Red Raiders of Texas Tech, who came extremely close to playing for last year's Title, and the underrated Rebels of Mississippi, who had barely risen to the Top 25.
Texas Tech wasn't pleased with this matchup. But it turned out to be arguably the most thrilling game of 2008 bowl season.
The Rebels started out with an enormous lead, but 'Tech closed in late. The momentum shifted many times, but the Rebels held on in a shocker, 47-34.
In this introduction, we hope to send a message that no one is safe in any of these bowls and anything can happen on any given Saturday.
The statement is even truer for games on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, as we've seen many times this season.
This is not the typical predictions done by one author; it's a collaboration of four B/R Creature experts that all offer a unique perspective to every game.
There will be a prize for the person who finishes with the best percentage, so fill out your ballots in the comment section below!
Stay tuned and come back to keep up with the standings! Can you beat the experts?
New Mexico Bowl - Fresno State (8-4) vs. Wyoming (6-6)
Believe it or not, these delectable cupcake teams are not from the same conference! Wyoming will put up a fight, but Fresno State has too much offensive power.
007's Pick: Fresno State 41, Wyoming 30
The momentum from a miraculous, gutsy, last-second two point conversion in which an offensive lineman caught a tipped pass and hurdled into the endzone, leads Fresno State into a battle against Wyoming.
Buell’s Pick: Fresno State 31, Wyoming 23
I think Fresno State has a superb running back in Ryan Matthews. Neither team has a good defense, so look for a ton of points.
Fresno State will maintain control the whole game.
CM's Pick: Fresno State 38, Wyoming 24
Wyoming, happy to see their first bowl since 2004,will not be so happy to see happy to see RB Ryan Matthews.
Nelson's Pick: Fresno State 28, Wyoming 17
St. Petersburg Bowl - Central Florida (8-4) vs. Rutgers (8-4)
A tough battle is expected between the Knights of UCF and the Scarlet Knights from Rutgers. UCF has played tough this season, but Rutgers is stronger in every phase of the game.
007's Pick: Rutgers 31, UCF 21
The Knights in Scarlet are equipped with armor and protection and will be too much for the Knights from Central Florida.
Buell’s Pick: Rutgers 34, UCF 17
Rutgers is a solid team, and deserves better than a toilet bowl. They’ll take it to UCF in one of the least entertaining bowls of the season.
CM's Pick: Rutgers 28, UCF 21
Rutgers has scored at least 23 points in every one of their games this season. The Scarlet Knights are making a case for a Big Ten invite and they'll wrap this one in the bag.
Nelson's Pick: Rutgers 42, UCF 24
New Orleans Bowl - Southern Miss (7-5) vs. Middle Tennessee State (9-3)
Despite a seemingly impressive 9-3 record, the Blue Raiders have only beaten cupcakes and weak teams from their inner conference.
They lost to Clemson, Troy, and Mississippi State by a combined score of 95-27, which says it all.
007's Pick: Southern Miss 41, Mid Tenn St. 24
Trying to add to a terrific season, the Blue Raiders put their good record on the line but come up short against the Golden Eagles.
Buell’s Pick: USM 30, MTSU 17
The New Orleans Bowl was voted one of the least interesting bowl games by CBS and that’s exactly what it’ll be. Lots of points…and empty seats.
CM's Pick: Mid Tenn St. 48, Southern Miss 41
MTSU and Tony Franklin’s offense extend a remarkable seven-game winning streak.
Nelson's Pick: MTSU 38, USM 27
Las Vegas Bowl - No. 18 Oregon State (8-4) vs. No. 14 Brigham Young (10-2)
Brigham Young has turned many heads this season, from the upset they pulled over the third ranked Sooners in Week 1, to the 54-28 defeat they suffered at home against the Seminoles.
The Dam Workers dug themselves a hole early on, but they came together destroying three of their conference rivals.
007's Pick: Brigham Young 33, Oregon State 27
Oregon State has been very impressive this season and they came up just short against the Rose Bowl-bound Oregon Ducks, their intrastate rival in the recent classic and traditional "Civil War."
Meanwhile, Brigham Young's lack of challenges this season has led to a lofty 10-2 record, but will pave the way to their demise, as well.
Buell’s Pick: Oregon State 41, Brigham Young 33
Contrary to popular belief, BYU is not among the elite. Oregon State has many weapons and will hold BYU to 20 points with a semi-decent defense.
This will be a very entertaining game.
CM's Pick: Oregon State 35, BYU 20
Two of the country’s best QB/RB duos battle it out. Max Hall and Harvey Unga vs. Sean Canfield and Jaquizz Rodgers. Expect a shootout.
Nelson's Pick: BYU 41, Oregon State 37
Poinsettia Bowl - No. 23 Utah (9-3) vs. California (8-4)
A matchup between two overrated, top 35 teams from the west face off in a very intriguing game.
Utah hasn't been acquainted with style points this season.
California has played tough all season, but they fell to USC, Oregon, Oregon State, and even Washington by the combined score of 145-30.
007's Pick: Utah 28, California 24
Say that Bowl name (Maaco Las Vegas Bowl) five times fast. You'll be able to do it, but you'll wear yourself out in the process.
California's Jahvid Best is returning to the playing field for the first time since he experienced the horrific, concussion-suffering incident.
And, anyone that can lead his team to a win in a Bowl game after an injury like that deserves recognition.
Buell’s Pick: California 34, Utah 27
The Utes have a well-balanced team and their offense looks to rough up one of the worst pass defenses in the nation.
CM's Pick: Utah 44, Cal 34
Utah has won eight straight bowl games. Cal will be without Jahvid Best.
The Utes defense is the difference maker in this game.
Nelson's Pick: Utah 20, Cal 17
Hawaii Bowl - Nevada (8-4) vs. SMU (7-5)
SMU can only hope that Nevada's offense doesn't show up to Aloha Stadium.
Nevada started the season in embarrassing fashion, but they've kicked every opponent to the curb since the start of October.
007's Pick: Nevada 52, SMU 24
Nevada didn’t push early on against Boise, which kept them from pulling the upset.
Nevada shouldn’t have too much trouble trying to prove their dominate ways against Southern Methodist.
Buell’s Pick: Nevada 28, SMU 17
Nevada is an outstanding team with three 1,000 yard rushers.
Nevada has too many weapons to count. SMU ran with Houston, and that’s the only bright spot of their year.
CM's Pick: Nevada 45, SMU 31
SMU’s much anticipated return to the post-season will be ruined by Nevada’s 1,000 yard rushing triumvirate.
Nelson's Pick: Nevada 35, SMU 21
Little Caesars Pizza Bowl - Mashall (6-6) vs. Ohio (9-4)
The Thundering Herd has been quiet this season, with only two victories over teams with a winning record this season.
007's Pick: Ohio 27, Marshall 17
I can't remember Marshall University being anywhere close to relevant since QB Byron Leftwich took the snaps behind center.
Buell’s Pick: Marshall 20, Ohio 17
The least interesting bowl of the year features Ohio and Marshall.
I think Ohio will run away with it, leaving Marshall in the dust.
Did I mention the free pizza?
CM’s Pick: Ohio 45, Marshall 28
Otherwise known as the family and friends bowl. That’s all who will be watching.
Nelson’s Pick: Marshall 24, Ohio 10
Meineke Car Care Bowl - No. 17 Pittsburgh (9-3) vs. North Carolina (8-4)
Pittsburgh has been a very explosive team that has averaged over 399 yards of total offense per game.
The Tar Heels have been up and down all season, but they have performed on both sides of the ball.
Thus, this will be one of the best bowl games of 2009-2010. Pittsburgh wins a slugfest that slowly develops into a thriller.
007's Pick: Pittsburgh 30, North Carolina 24
North Carolina has a stellar defense, but there is no way that they are going to be able to shut down the Panther's freshman phenom RB Dion Lewis, or outscore him, for that matter.
Buell’s Pick: Pittsburgh 31, North Carolina 20
Pittsburgh deserves better. They were so close to a Sugar Bowl berth but fell just short against Cincinnati in a thriller. So instead they get sweet revenge, taking it out on North Carolina.
CM’s Pick: Pitt 31, North Carolina 21
Two failed NFL coaches, two terrific defensive lines, but one star freshman RB that makes the difference. The ’stache gets doused in Gatorade.
Nelson’s Pick: Pitt 31, UNC 21
Emerald Bowl - Boston College (8-4) vs. No. 24 USC (8-4)
Both of these teams are very solid, but were both embarrassed by the superior teams in their conference.
Statistically, these teams are very similar. Coincidently, they both have a 6.3 (+) margin of victory.
The difference makers in this game will be the length of travel and the inspiring story of Jake Olsen, keeping the Trojans motivated and hungry for a win.
007's Pick: USC 31, Boston College 20
This certainly isn't the Bowl game that Head Coach Pete Carroll envisioned his team playing in, but everyone else in the country loves to see the mighty Trojans fall.
However, despite everyone's wishes, a fifth loss in 2009 isn't in store for USC.
They take on Boston College in a game that could easily be considered "home field advantage."
Buell’s Pick: USC 28, Boston College 24
With so many players ineligible, a rookie QB, and a rebuilding team falling apart at the seams, look for Boston College to take advantage.
They're now all about being in and winning in bowl games. Look for the upset here.
CM's Pick: Boston Coll. 27, USC 22
Classic ACC-Pac-10 match-up. BC racks up the frequent flyer miles but RB Joe McKnight burns them on the ground.
Nelson’s Pick: USC 31, Boston College 13
Music City Bowl - Kentucky (7-5) vs. Clemson (8-5)
Clemson is very balanced team in very phase of the game. Kentucky is a decent team that hasn't lived up to their potential.
Kentucky will play tough, but they don't have enough playmakers.
007's Pick: Clemson 34, Kentucky 21
The Wildcats are getting pretty accustomed to this bowl, and they definitely play with a lot of heart.
But CJ Spiller has a Heisman-like performance and he’ll lead his team to a victory.
Buell’s Pick: Clemson 34, Kentucky 24
This should be an entertaining game. Underrated Kentucky looks to upset Clemson, and I’m picking them in an upset.
The SEC is a tough conference and the Wildcats have played with the best of them.
CM’s Pick: Kentucky 27, Clemson 24 (OT?)
The SEC has owned the ACC this year but don’t expect CJ and the Tigers to lay down for the Wildcats.
Nelson’s Pick: Clemson 40, Kentucky 28
Independence Bowl - Texas A&M (6-6) vs. Georgia (7-5)
Georgia had some mishaps this season, but they’ve also performed against some of the most elite.
Texas A&M will put up a fight, but Georgia will grasp hold of the victory.
007’s Pick: Georgia 37, Texas A&M 24
I don't know about you, but I know when I think of "Independence", I think about "Advocare V100."
Despite the profound Bowl name, I love this match-up. The Aggies vs. the Bulldogs — two classic teams laying it all on the line.
Buell’s Pick: Georgia 34, Texas A&M 31
Georgia makes a mockery of Texas A&M…nothing to see here, keep rolling.
CM’s Pick: Georgia 37, TAMU 20
A&M can score but can they slow AJ Green? A&M suffers the first of many Big 12 Bowl defeats.
Nelson’s Pick: Georgia 38, A&M 32
Eagle Bank Bowl - UCLA (6-6) vs. Temple (9-3)
Temple looks like a contender to most experts in the media, but their non-conference games consisted of Army, Navy, Penn State, and Villanova.
Temple beat the Independents, but lost to Villanova and fell apart against the Nittany Lions.
UCLA has given every team some heartache and this game will be no exception.
007’s Pick: UCLA 24, Temple 19
Even though UCLA is only 6-6, there is absolutely no way I can pick the Temple Owls to beat the Bruins on the football field.
Great work getting to a bowl, but here’s your stop.
Buell’s Pick: UCLA 23, Temple 17
I see an “upset” here, and think Temple will defeat the Bruins. Bernard Pierce is underrated and will rack up the yardage, showing the nation he’s legit.
UCLA won’t be able to contain him for long.
CM’s Pick: Temple 24, UCLA 17
Al Golden continues window dressing his resume for the next high-profile coaching vacancy.
Nelson’s Pick: Temple 24, UCLA 21
Champs Sports Bowl - No. 15 Miami (FL) (9-3) vs. No. 25 Wisconsin (9-3)
These two powerhouse offenses bring their swagger every week, while the defenses just does enough to keep their team intact.
Miami (FL) holds on in a shootout.
007's Pick: Miami (FL) 45, Wisconsin 32
This is kind of like a home game for Miami. Meanwhile Bucky the Badger is a long way from home.
The U's Jacory Harris shines in this one, giving Hurricane fans everywhere a bright hope for 2010.
Buell’s Pick: Miami (FL) 27, Wisconsin 14
Miami is a tougher team, and Wisconsin has John Clay. Both have good defenses, and I like the Badgers in another upset.
CM’s Pick: Wisconsin 27, Miami 23
Wisconsin travels from the sunny beaches of Hawaii to the palm trees in Orlando.
It’s going to be tough going home to Madison, especially after trying to stop battle-tested Jacory Harris in his first big showcase for the 2010 Heisman.
Nelson’s Pick: Miami 45, Wisconsin 24
Roady's Humanitarian Bowl - Bowling Green (7-5) vs. Idaho (7-5)
The Vandals have a very productive offense, but absolutely no defense.
Bowling Green has an average defense, and a passing game that will blow you away.
Interesting enough, both teams were blown to pieces against Boise State earlier in the season. The blowouts combine to 73 points.
But one of them will win on Smurf Turf.
007’s Pick: BGSU 40, Idaho 33
Not exactly the most fascinating match-up in the world, is it? Well, somebody will be watching, though, and that somebody will most likely be me.
As I pay the bills and clean the house with the play-by-play blasting from this game on my television, preparing for the much more intriguing Bowl game being played later that night.
Buell’s Pick: Bowling Green 27, Idaho 21
Tyler Sheehan and Freddie Barnes are both outstanding playmakers from Bowling Green.
Their defense is slightly better than Idaho’s, and it will come down to the last possession.
CM’s Pick: Bowling Green 35, Idaho 28
Idaho can finally claim victory on the blue turf!
Nelson’s Pick: Idaho 27, BGSU 17
Holiday Bowl - No. 20 Arizona (8-4) vs. No. 22 Nebraska (9-4)
Arizona has put on a show every week since falling to the Huskies in early October.
The ‘Cats put up 70 against Stanford and UCLA, challenged Oregon to an overtime thriller, and ended the season on a two game winning streak.
Nebraska has been a very resilient team, finishing the regular season on a five game winning streak, after losing to Texas Tech and Iowa State.
Resilience will be key.
007’s Pick: Nebraska 22, Arizona 19
He almost stole the Big XII from Colt McCoy.
He almost led his team to a BCS Bowl.
He was the first defensive player nominated in the Heisman Trophy consideration in over a decade.
He is Ndamukong Suh and he will lead the pack of Cornhuskers to a victory over Arizona in perhaps the best bowl game, before the new decade.
Buell’s Pick: Nebraska 21, Arizona 20
Ndamakong Suh is a fantastic defensive playmaker and Nick Foles leads a very good Wildcat team that doesn’t offer much defense.
If Nebraska can hold Arizona back, they’ll get the win.
CM’s Pick: Nebraska 13, Arizona 10 (OT?)
Foles vs. Suh. Too bad Foles can pass and Suh can’t.
Nelson’s Pick: Arizona 16, Nebraska 9
Armed Forces Bowl - Houston (10-3) vs. Air Force (7-5)
Despite the fact that Air Force is listed as the home team, Fort Worth is much closer to Houston.
Air Force has a pretty solid defense, an exceptional running game, but their passing game is almost non-existent.
007’s Pick: Houston 45, Air Force 31
Chase Keenum had a tremendous season at the helm for Houston and hopes to end the year on a high note against Air Force.
It would only be fitting for one of the Armed Forces to pick up a victory, but Chase Keenum and company has other ideas….
Buell’s Pick: Houston 42, Air Force 34
This game will prove very interesting. Air Force does defend the skies quite well, but will they be able to hold back a monstrous Cougar offense?
In a rematch of last years bowl, look for Houston to get the win due to a lack of offense from Air Force.
CM’s Pick: Houston 28, Air Force 14
The third meeting in two years.
AF’s well-executed triple option offense is a little too familiar to fool Houston.
Keenum proves too much for the Falcons.
Nelson’s Pick: Houston 27, Air Force 17
Sun Bowl - Oklahoma (7-5) vs. No. 21 Stanford (8-4)
Stanford has played superb this season.
They dominated at home, dominated on the road, and they might be the most balanced team in the combination of special teams, defense, and the balanced attack on offense.
Oklahoma has been on a roller coaster ride all season, but their defense is top notch and their offense is sensational.
The Sooners' PF/PA (Points Forced/Points Allowed) ratio is 71-85 on the road, and 26-30 on a neutral site, which adds up to a 1-5 record.
Oklahoma allowed less than eight points per game, put up over 275 points, and ended unblemished at home.
The Sun Bowl will end in a thriller, as Oklahoma proves once again they can’t win the close ones.
007’s Pick: Stanford 27, Oklahoma 23
A much-maligned, injury-plagued, under-acheiving season for the Oklahoma Sooners is almost, and finally, over.
To finish it off, how about a healthy dose of Heisman Trophy runner-up RB from Stanford, Toby Gerhart, to add insult to injury?
Well, that's the medicine prescribed by the Doctors from the BCS, (specializing in mental insanity, evidently), as Gerhart shreds the Oklahoma defense in a Cardinal victory.
Buell’s Pick: Stanford 37, Oklahoma 24
Oklahoma has a tremendous run defense (7th in the nation), and Stanford has the Heisman runner-up Toby Gerhart at running back.
Something’s gotta give, and it won’t be the Cardinal.
CM’s Pick: Stanford 26, Oklahoma 20
Two young QB’s balanced by three terrific RB’s. Gerald McCoy and Toby Gerhart will be talking about this one for many Pro Bowls to come.
Nelson’s Pick: Stanford 20, OU 17.
Texas Bowl - Navy (8-4) vs. Missouri (8-4)
This game isn’t looked at as a big bowl game, but it should be highly competitive.
Missouri looked like a contender early in the season, but they quickly fell apart.
Navy has put up a tough fight every week, with their elusive running game and tough defense.
007’s Pick: Navy 27, Missouri 23
No, there's nothing quite like a "Texas Bowl" where neither team playing in the game is actually from Texas. But I've heard that Missouri is close.
Buell’s Pick: Missouri 24, Navy 17
This is just about the oddest match of the bowl games. Missouri and Navy have nothing in common but the love of football.
I think it comes down to the run vs. the pass, and who scores last.
CM’s Pick: Navy 24, Missouri 20 (OT?)
Navy’s hard to defend if you’re not used to a well-executed triple option. Just ask Charlie Weis and Jim Tressel.
Nelson’s Pick: Navy 24, Missouri 21
Insight Bowl - Minnesota (6-6) vs. Iowa State (6-6)
Despite the fact that this game could break the snooze button, it should be a very competitive game.
Minnesota has wins against Air Force and Northwestern, but they were obliterated by the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions.
In addition, the Golden Gophers almost lost to the dreaded Jackrabbits of South Dakota State.
007’s Pick: Minnesota 23, Iowa State 20
These two teams could play 100 times and they'd probably still break even.
Don't expect a lot of thrills in this one, as one of the two punters will receive the game ball.
Buell’s Pick: Minnesota 14, Iowa State 10
This game is anything but pretty.
The Cyclones of Iowa State matchup against the Golden Gophers of Minnesota, both at 6-6.
It’ll be a snoozer for sure, but if you happen to tune in, Minnesota should win in a very ugly game.
CM’s Pick: Minnesota 34, Iowa State 18
Both teams have won as often as they have lost.
This bowl is just an excuse to get out of Minnesota and Iowa in the dead of winter. Minnesota will miss Decker.
Nelson’s Pick: Iowa State 14, Minnesota 10
Chick-fil-A Bowl - No. 11 Virginia Tech (9-3) vs. Tennessee (7-5)
The Volunteers created havoc for Florida and Alabama, manhandled Georgia and South Carolina, and finished the season in a huge comeback, beating Kentucky in overtime.
But they won’t have it easy against a dominate Virginia Tech team.
Both of these teams have firepower in all phases of the game, and this will come down to the Hokies’ special teams.
007’s Prediction: Virginia Tech 28, Tennessee 20
My favorite fast-food joint is affiliated with one of the best bowl games of the season.
As I "eat more chicken," Tennessee tries to eat more Hokie, and they do a pretty good job of it.
Beamer-Ball outlasts a terrific, Kiffin-led upset bid, however, in a classic showdown.
Buell’s Pick: VA Tech 36, Tennessee 33
Tennessee has to taste the power of Virginia Tech in this bowl game. Ryan Williams leads a powerful Hokie rushing attack, against a terrible rush defense.
That spells trouble for Lane Kiffin and company.
CM’s Pick: Virginia Tech 31, Tennessee 17
ACC continues its redemption against the SEC.
Nelson’s Pick: Virginia Tech 25, Tennessee 17
Outback Bowl - Northwestern (8-4) vs. Auburn (7-5)
Typically, Auburn would be a shoe-in to win this game, but Northwestern has improved substantially since the start of the season and they look to claw the Tigers.
The ‘Cats hand the Big Ten a much needed bowl victory in thrilling fashion.
007’s Pick: Northwestern 27, Auburn 24
In the first football game of 2010, we have a catfight. The Wildcats from Northwestern square off against the Tigers from Auburn.
Both teams have had their upset bids in recent weeks.
Northwestern handed Iowa their first loss of the 2009 season and Auburn nearly ended Alabama's perfect season in the "Iron Bowl."
Auburn scratches and claws its way to a victory over N'Western.
Buell’s Pick: Auburn 24, Northwestern 20
The Big Ten traditionally struggles against the fast SEC schools. This one is no different.
Auburn will get back on track, ending the year with a win over Northwestern.
CM’s Pick: Auburn 35, Northwestern 27
Fitzgerald vs. Chizik. Up and coming coaching prospect vs. one of the year’s biggest coaching surprises.
Auburn’s new found offense is the difference in this game.
Nelson’s Pick: Auburn 28, N’ Western 10
Capital One Bowl - No. 13 Penn State (10-2) vs. No. 12 LSU (9-3)
These two overrated teams are all about the defense and are very well matched.
They both know how to put up points, but only when it becomes necessary.
Joe Pa is one of the greatest coaches of all time, but this could very well be his last game.
007’s Pick: LSU 24, Penn State 21
Joe Paterno leads his Penn State Nittany Lions into, yet another, catfight against Les Miles' LSU Tigers.
Les Miles takes his LSU team to victory over Penn State in a slugfest.
Buell’s Pick: LSU 23, Penn State 13
Same story as the Outback.
A Penn State defense vs. an LSU speedy offense. Special teams could end up deciding this one if nothing gives.
Trindon Holiday will tip that in the Tigers favor.
CM’s Pick: LSU 17, PSU 14
A game that will boast higher TV ratings than at least two BCS Bowls.
Nelson’s Pick: LSU 31, Penn State 30
Gator Bowl - No. 16 West Virginia (9-3) vs. Florida State (6-6)
Florida State has an explosive offense, but their defense couldn’t defend the Cleveland Browns.
Considering the big difference in records and the fact that West Virginia won their last two games against Pitt and Rutgers, you would expect a steamroll, but that won’t be the case.
007’s Pick: West Virginia 31, Florida State 24
I've never once shown favoritism in any game I've ever picked, but as a Florida State Seminole fan, (it's something you're born into) Bobby Bowden will be missed.
Although West Virginia absolutely should win this game and they are also led by a great coach in Bill Stewart, Florida State has shown glimpses of their great potential.
In Bobby's final hoorah, I cannot see them allowing him to walk off the field anything but a winner.
Buell’s Pick: FSU 28, WVU 27
Florida State doesn’t deserve it. Bowden is a legend and a class act, but they barely deserve a bowl berth this season, much less the Gator Bowl.
That said, tears will be shed, and emotions will run high in Bowden’s last game.
West Virginia may struggle to prevent an upset.
CM’s Pick: West Virginia 30, Florida State 24
Bowden says goodbye on a sour note.
Nelson’s Pick: WVU 27, FSU 24
Rose Bowl - No. 8 Ohio State (10-2) vs. No. 7 Oregon (10-2)
These clubs are polar opposites in every area.
The Bucks are built on a tremendous defense, while the Ducks are built on a powerhouse offense.
Ohio State had trouble early on in the season, but excelled near the end.
Oregon started out extremely dominate, but slipped more at the end.
The list goes on.
007’s Pick: Oregon 38, Ohio State 27
This is obviously one of the more intriguing Bowl games of the year, featuring two of the most dominant programs all year long.
Ohio State's Terelle Pryor is still very raw, and with the amount of points this Oregon offense can score, I don't see the Buckeyes outscoring them.
Buell’s Pick: Oregon 34, Ohio State 27
In another intriguing matchup, two questions need to be answered.
1. Is the Buckeye defense smart enough, and fast enough, to stop Jeremiah Masoli and company?
2. Is Oregon capable of capitalizing on OSU’s mistakes?
Again, this is offense vs. defense…but look for the Big Ten to fall short. Again.
CM’s Pick: Oregon 34, Ohio State 27
Terrelle Pryor is unleashed; Masoli has never had a leash. Oregon maintains the Pac-10 dominance in Pasadena.
Nelson’s Pick: Oregon 34, Ohio State 21
Sugar Bowl - No. 3 Cincinnati (12-0) vs. No. 5 Florida (12-1)
The Bearcats showed an enormous amount of fight, passion, and resilience, as they defeated Pittsburgh in what was considered the Big East Championship, 45-44.
In the SEC Championship, the Gators were wrapped in a tailspin, as they faltered to the Tide, 32-13.
007’s Pick: Florida 34, Cincinnati 26
With a Coach-less Bearcats team and an angry Gators team coming off a stunning defeat with Tim Tebow running the offense in his very last game as a Florida Gator, can I really pick against Florida?
Buell’s Pick: Florida 34, Cincinnati 28
Bryan Kelly left, most of their players are thinking about the draft, and the defense is awaiting annihilation from Tim Tebow.
Cincinnati is no Alabama, and won’t be able to stand up to the Gators.
CM’s Pick: Florida 42, Cincinnati 24
Tim Tebow will cry regardless of the outcome. Urban and the read-option prove too much for Cincy’s suspect defense.
Goliath retakes the Sugar Bowl crown.
Nelson’s Pick: Florida 45, Cincy 21
International Bowl - South Florida (7-5) vs. Northern Illinois (7-5)
On paper, this is a blowout.
But long distance hasn’t been on South Florida’s side, and it will play out to the Huskies’ favor.
007’s Pick: South Florida 31, Northern Illinois 24
An impressive year for Northern Illinois, and yet another disappointing ending to a promising season for South Florida.
B.J. Daniels has ran all over the field and all over the opposing D’s, and he will become the difference maker in this contest.
Buell’s Pick: USF 28, N. ILL 14
Beer and snow are just about the only reasons you’d want to go see this game.
The weather may play a big factor, as the South Florida Bulls have never heard of snow before.
They’re already going through major problems after Jim Leavitt’s little “issue” making the news.
CM’s Pick: South Florida 40, UNI 32
Too much off-the-field distraction for South Florida. NIU takes advantage.
Nelson’s Pick: Northern Illinois 17, USF 10
Papajohns.com Bowl - South Carolina (7-5) vs. Connecticut (7-5)
Connecticut had a very difficult season, dealing with off-the-field issues related to Jasper Howard.
Immediately after the tragic events, Connecticut lost three consecutive games to West Virginia, Rutgers, and Cincinnati by ten points combined.
But Connecticut went on to finish their last three games with a “w” and look to surprise the “visiting” Gamecocks in an upset.
007’s Pick: South Carolina 21, Connecticut 17
Connecticut is a good team hidden in a mediocre 7-5 record and in the thick of the second best conference in all of College Football.
For South Carolina, they are in the middle of the pack, as well, in THE best Conference, still, in College Football.
UConn has the edge, the inspiration, and the victory at the end of the day.
Buell’s Pick: Connecticut 27, South Carolina 24
South Carolina played great, and they’ve played terrible. I’ve labeled them unpredictable long ago.
Connecticut has been playing emotional football ever since Jasper Howard’s death.
CM’s Pick: UConn 26, South Carolina 24
Spurrier and the Gamecocks will be just a little too much for UConn’s feel good story.
Nelson’s Pick: SCU 24, Uconn 21
Cotton Bowl - Oklahoma State (9-3) vs. Mississippi (8-4)
Oklahoma State did beat Georgia, Missouri, and Texas Tech, but they barely survived A&M, Colorado, and Rice.
In addition, they were brought down to earth to Houston, were ripped apart by the Longhorns, and lost in shutout fashion to Oklahoma to end the season.
Mississippi also ended the season in a loss, but they finished the season in third place in the SEC West, which speaks volumes.
007’s Pick: Mississippi 34, Oklahoma State 24
Oklahoma State was virtually strong all year, while Mississippi did prove, in fact, to be overrated from their lofty preseason Top 10 rankings.
Ole Miss finished with an 8-4 record, with the help of one of the better QB's in the country, Jevan Snead.
Snead proves to be the difference in this one and leads the Rebels to an upset victory over the Cowboys.
Buell’s Pick: Miss 30, OK St 27
Ole Miss and Oklahoma State matchup in what should be a great game between two evenly matched teams.
And on January 2nd, this will be the only game worth watching.
They both ended the season on a high note, and I think Mississippi will carry the momentum.
CM’s Pick: Ole Miss 33, Oklahoma State 27 (OT?)
The SEC dominance of the Big 12 continues.
Nelson’s Pick: Ole Miss 37, OKLA ST 24
Liberty Bowl - Arkansas (7-5) vs. East Carolina (9-4)
East Carolina did pull off the upset against Houston, but fell to VA Tech, WVU, UNC, and SMU by a combined 49 points.
Arkansas gave Georgia and Mississippi a tough battle, tore apart Auburn, Troy, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Auburn and gave Florida and LSU a couple of thrilling games.
007’s Pick: Arkansas 31, East Carolina 17
You may be right. I may be crazy. But, it just may be a lunatic you're looking for.
I just don't see East Carolina being able to hang with Arkansas and their highly-touted QB, Ryan Mallett, for very long.
However, for the sake of their 9-4 record and upset of Houston to claim the Conference USA title, I'll spot them 24 and keep them in the ball game.
Buell’s Pick: Arkansas 34, East Carolina 24
This could end up being a rout, or an overtime battle.
It all depends on ECU’s ability to play defense.
Arkansas has a great pass game going, and ECU has a terrible pass defense. If the Razorbacks take advantage, it’s game over.
CM’s Pick: Arkansas 42, ECU 21
Skip Holtz makes a stronger case for a BCS promotion catching the Razorbacks off guard.
Nelson’s Pick: ECU 17, Arkansas 14
Alamo Bowl - Michigan State (6-6) vs. Texas Tech (8-4)
Texas Tech has obviously been introduced to style points.
They love to absolutely destroy their opponents and love to have the edge as one of the most feared teams in college football.
After all, fear is what separates the pretenders from the actual contenders. Expect a landslide.
007’s Pick: Texas Tech 45, Michigan State 24
So, apparently, half of the Michigan State football team decided to take up boxing recently.
The only problem with that is that by participating in two sports at the same time, they are apparently no longer eligible for the Bowl game against Texas Tech.
And now, one of the most prolific offenses in the nation will be going up against about seven Spartans on defense.
Somehow, I just don't see that working out so well.
Buell’s Pick: TTU 45, MSU 24
Texas Tech knows how to air it out and Michigan State doesn’t know how to stop the other team from doing it.
The Spartans are also dealing with more suspensions, which will hinder their focus from the huge task in front of them.
Should MSU even show up?
CM’s Pick: Texas Tech 50, Michigan State 21
Red Raiders make up for last year’s bowl disappearance.
Nelson’s Pick: TTU 34, MSU 28
Fiesta Bowl - No. 6 Boise State (13-0) vs. No. 4 TCU (12-0)
Boise State + Smurf Turf = loss for opposing team.
Boise State + A fired up, unblemished Horned Frogs team = A TCU victory and more reason to have a playoff.
007’s Pick: TCU 41, Boise State 28
Thses two teams could compete with any "legitement" team. Let them play.
Give them the accolades and recognition they deserve. And let the countrymen rejoice!
So, at the end of this season, Texas or Alabama takes the crown, and another worthy and deserving team is left on the outside looking in.
TCU defeats Boise State in a game that means everything to both Universities, and to every fan that has a brain and a passion for this game.
Buell's Pick: TCU 36, Boise State 27
TCU has an outstanding defense. Boise State has Kellen Moore.
It’s the battle of the undefeated.
It’s a war between two unappreciated non-AQ teams.
It’s a fight between two of the catchiest uniforms in the FBS.
TCU is a more balanced team though, and will defeat Boise State…again.
CM’s Pick: TCU 35, BSU 16
A rerun from last year’s Poinsettia but on a broader stage.
TCU’s defense shows up again but so does their offense.
Nelson’s Pick: TCU 42, Boise State 21
Orange Bowl - No. 10 Iowa (10-2) vs. No. 9 Georgia Tech (11-2)
This bowl season has been filled with surprises and you can expect the same in tonight's Orange Bowl.
Bulanga (OT, IA) and Morgan (DE, GT) will be a clash of power, but in the end it will be the Hawkeye's offense that we didn't know existed, that gets the job done.
007's Pick: Iowa 23, Georgia Tech 19
Iowa survived with a perfect record for as long as it could during the regular season.
An injury to their starting QB didn't help, but a major BCS Bowl still awaits them.
Georgia Tech had a great season in Head Coach Paul Johnson's first year at the helm in Atlanta.
The Yellow Jackets' triple option offense is dangerous and the Hawkeyes simply won't be able to keep up.
Buell’s Pick: Georgia Tech 27, Iowa 17
Georgia Tech boasts a great coach, a decent defense, and the best triple option attack in the nation.
Iowa has a solid defense, no offense, and a bowl game losing streak.
It all points to the Jackets winning.
Iowa will have to shoot for a comeback, but this is no small time Big Ten opponent.
CM’s Pick: Georgia Tech 31, Iowa 23
When was the last time we saw a compelling matchup at the Orange Bowl?
Great defense versus Paul Johnson’s innovative offense.
The Big Ten BCS woes continue.
Nelson’s Pick: Georgia Tech 16, Iowa 10
GMAC Bowl - No. 25 Central Michigan (11-2) vs. Troy
Despite the long list of cupcakes, Central Michigan finally cracked the Top 25 in the Associated Press after lurking the entire season.
The Trojans are workaholics that allow a bundle of points every week, so their offense has to push that much further.
007’s Pick: Central Michigan 41, Troy 27
Nothing says "Happy New Year" quite like having the GMAC Bowl right before the National Championship game, is there?
Fortunately for us, Central Michigan's Dan Lefevour is one of the best in the business and is the reason behind the Chippewas' 11-2 record.
LeFevour and the Chippewas defeat the Trojans of Troy in bit of a shootout.
Buell’s Pick: Central MI 42, Troy 31
Central Michigan feature’s the poor man’s Tim Tebow: Dan LeFavour.
He may play in the C-USA, but he’s accounted for more touchdowns than any player in NCAA history.
Troy won’t be able to stop LeFavour and company from lighting up the scoreboard.
CM’s Pick: Central Michigan 44, Troy 35
Alas, a Michigan team wins a bowl game.
Nelson’s Pick: Central Michigan 36, Troy 28
BCS National Championship - No. 2 Texas (13-0) vs. No. 1 Alabama (13-0)
Many were shocked to see Alabama roll past the Gators in blowout fashion, but I was thinking deja vu the whole time.
Florida is a more sound team than Texas, but the Longhorns will put up a tougher fight against the crimson and white.
The Tide will pick up the pace in the 4th quarter. The game will be more competitive than the score illustrates, but it will still end in a roll.
007’s Pick: Alabama 31, Texas 14
For Texas, it has only been since the 2005 season when Vince Young led the charge against the USC Trojans to win it all.
For Alabama, they haven't celebrated since 1992.
Crimson Tide Head Coach Nick Saban is proving exactly how good of a coach he really is, and Mark Ingram will try to deliver a Heisman-caliber performance to wrap up a dream season for the University of Alabama.
The dream comes true, and Alabama wins the BCS National Championship, adding to their 12 National Titles.
Buell’s Pick: Alabama 31, Texas 24
Alabama features the Heisman winner Mark Ingram, a solid quarterback, and the best defense in the FBS.
Texas has Colt McCoy, a great tandem of wideouts, and the underdog card. Watch out ’Bama fans…Texas has been here before, and they know how to pull out an upset.
CM’s Pick: Alabama 27, Texas 17
Alabama’s defense will be too much for Colt McCoy. Ingram does the rest.
Nelson’s Pick: Alabama 21, Texas 10
