Lecavalier Close to Signing Lifelong Contract

Matt WoodmanCorrespondent IJune 20, 2008

So apparently the Tampabay Lightning are close to signing their star center Vinny Lecavalier to a lifetime contract. RDS recently reported the two sides are making great progress and hope to have a deal done by July 1st. Lecavalier is entering the final year of his four year deal worth 7.2 million a season.

The contract most likely won’t be as ridiculous as some as those famous Charles Wang contracts (like the 10 year 87 million Alexei Yashin deal or the 15 year 67.5 million dollar Rick Dipietro deal) but one can still imagine the type of numbers Vinny will make.

My guess will be around 8 years at 8 to 9 million a year, with decreases in pay in later years. I’m guessing he’ll take less money to stay in Tampa, and if he ever did hit the open market he could be looking at around 10 million a season.

As a Habs fan I couldn’t be more delighted to hear this simply for one reason. We can finally put to rest all those ridiculous Lecavalier to Montreal rumors.  Personally I’m sick and tired of hearing them, and we all know Vinny is not coming to the Bell Centre. Here’s hoping those rumors can finally be laid to rest if this deal is sorted out!

Thanks for Reading
