It doesn’t matter if it’s Larry Brooks or just some random Caps’ fan; John Tortorella is an instant classic. Last night, Torts did it again. During a post-game press conference, the New York Rangers--John Tortorella’s team--had just endured a loss to their cross-town rivals, the New York Islanders.

It seems to happen every year. Either the Tampa Bay Lightning, or the Rangers, go on a mid-season slump, and Torts keeps himself quiet for as long as possible, until ‘Brooksie’ and him are in the same room.

Last night was the killer for this season.

The Rangers, as mentioned before, were coming off a 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders, putting them in last place in their division. This doesn’t seem that bad at first, but if you saw the Rangers’ first period, you would agree that they deserve to be last in the league.

They didn’t want the puck, the defenseman were completely out of their positions, and it took the Rangers 14 minutes to register their first shot on goal. That shot was taken by the Rangers’ resident superstar, Marian Gaborik. Torts had every right to finally burst.

“It was [EXPLICIT] coverage around the corners, he just brings it around the net, and it’s a fluky goal.”

Tortorella explained, describing the first Islander goal during the post-game interview. While that is what started the rant, it didn‘t end there. It was NY Post hockey writer, Larry Brooks, that set Tortorella off.

“If you don’t know what happened at the start of the game, then what’s the remedy for tomorrow?”

Brooksie asked. Tortorella didn’t understand the question. After Brooks explained what he meant (“What do you need to do?”), Torts’ response was,

“Play [EXPLICIT] harder.”

Apparently, Tortorella once again, didn’t understand the question and his response wasn’t good enough for Brooks, because Larry went and asked the question again. This is what made Tortorella lose his temper. Later, a nervous Joy Russo, asked “What is it going to take to get this group to figure it out?”, and this, ladies and gents, is where, yet another classic Torts rant took place.

“I’ll tell you right now, the thing that is unacceptable about tonight’s game--and we’re trying to stay positive around here, trying to work our way through it--but, when we play like [EXPLICIT] like that for 20 minutes, in a game like this, in a back-to-back situation. It’s unacceptable.”

“It is simply unacceptable how we started that game. I wish that I could give you a [EXPLICIT] explanation about it, but I can’t.”

This has happened before, many times. Whether it’s Tampa playing Ottawa, Toronto or New Jersey, Torts never fails to disappoint after a lacklustre performance by his boys, and I love it. It happened on TSN when he was a member of their panel occasionally as well. Sometimes, during the NHL on TSN Quiz, he would refuse to answer questions that he didn’t feel like answering.

He is my favourite coach to watch. Whenever the Rangers get squashed, I’ll turn on NHL on the Fly, to hear the post game interview that Tortorella has to offer. Without him, there would just be another reason not to watch hockey.
