The top three most physically demanding sports would probably be football, soccer/rugby, and hockey. I would say hockey is the hardest to get in shape for, and the hardest to perform in for a long time.
While football players take a lot of hits, hockey players probably take more, and are forced too. There is no out of bounds in hockey, you have to take a hit, and when you hit that ice, it hurts
As a hockey player, I also can say that the non stop movement is the most in any sport. Hockey players must have incredible stamina to keep up in the fast pace game. There is no resting while you're on the ice, you must be mentally alert and ready to sprint into action. You also have to give or take a hit at a moments notice.
The risks are also much higher in hockey, as we have seen recently when Richard Zhednik had his throat cut by a skate. Risk of concussions are also very high in hockey.
No disrespect to any other athletes in other sports, but being a hockey player is a different animal than being any other kind of athlete.
