Bowles Defends Newly Won Bantamweight Gold In March

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) today formally announced that on March 6th, 2010 at the "WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz" Event newly crowned WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles will defend his gold against consensus number one contender Dominick Cruz at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Bowles burst onto the Bantamweight scene by going undefeated stringing together victories over the likes of Damacio Page and Will Ribeiro before earning his chance to challenge then seemingly unstoppable Champion Miguel Torres. Bowles shocked world defeating the Mexican Armenian in under four minutes to capture the Bantamweight Championship of the world.

The challenger on the other hand, made a name for himself going 9-0 before making his WEC debut against "The California Kid" Urijah Faber where he was handed his first career loss. The following year in 2008, "The Dominator" Dominick Cruz returned with a vengeance, dropping to 135-pounds and ready to take on all comers. Since then he has strung together four victories with his latest performance handing Joseph Benavidez his first career loss which has put him right in line for the heavy-handed Champion.

Cruz poses many threats to the gold that rests around the waist of Bowles. The champions has great boxing and a wrestling base but cannot afford to stand with the challenger if he looks to be in this one for longer than a standard blink.

Also schedules for the March 6 super-card are the returned of two favourites in former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens "Lil Evil" Pulver and former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Angel Torres with each of their opponents set to be announced in the near future.

A Championship bout plus the return of two favourites smells like the recipe for one of the most anticipated cards in recent memory to me. Be sure to catch all the action live on VERSUS on March 6, 2010.
