The 2009 NY Giants Are Terrible: A Letter to GM Jerry Reese from the Fans

Dear Mr. Reese:
Thank you for restoring the pride in New York Giants football; however, with your recent success, did you find it necessary now to sell us a bill of goods?
Before the ink was even dry on the new multimillion-dollar contract for Chris Canty, the New Giants were being touted as one of the best defenses in the league, highlighting what would become one of the best defensive fronts of all time, striking fear into quarterbacks league—wide.
Seriously, no kid gloves here Mr. Reese, you blew it! The team is scary thin at safety and the talent pool at corner is thin. You gambled here and lost. Sure, Tom hires the coordinators but they stink, and we need to be very conscious about the changes. We need Tom to put the young guys on the field.
I went to Sunday night's game where the Philadelphia Eagles torched the New York Giants 45-38. It was very wet...it was very late...it was very disappointing! The Giants defense has lost its swagger, its edge, and its ability to make a play when you really need it.
30% percent of the problem is the lack of talent.
70% percent of the problem is that the talent has not bought into the schemes from these coordinators.
I don't blame the players or the injuries. Bill Sheridan was not the right choice. The players DO NOT believe in this guy, and he is in over is head. His schemes are weak, and the personnel are always out of position. He looks miserable on the sidelines, and week after week I keep asking myself how he gets so little out of the same guys that Steve Spagnuolo took to the Super Bowl and the playoffs.
Mr. Reese, I hope you understand this will be the first year under Tom Coughlin in four years the New York Giants will not be in the playoffs. Is this how you want to enter the new stadium? We expect more. They don't deserve to go to the playoffs; they are just not that good.
I hope Tom see's a change is needed.
The Steelers, the Ravens, the Bears, the Eagles, and the Giants are all known for DEFENSE. The defense needs to be aggressive and angry! The Ginats need players that want to fly to the ball. Please look what Rex Ryan has done with the Jets all in one year with a rookie QB. They are currently No. 1 in rushing and No. 1 in defense.
Example:
Osi Umenyiora
Osi is not Jared Allen! Osi is not Michael Strahan.
Mathias Kiwanuka
Kiwi is not Julius Peppers. Kiwi is also not George Martin or Leonard Marshall.
Aaron Ross
Ross is not Darrelle Revis. Ross is also not Mark Collins or Mark Haynes.
Mr. Reese, these players have let the fans, the franchise, and their teammates down. We can see the problems from the stands and on TV, yet we see NO URGENCY from the coordinators!
Changes are needed. Outside the coordinators, it is very apparent the Giants need a REAL cornerback, another safety, a first round linebacker like Brian Cushing or Patrick Willis, and a REAL defensive tackle if Fred Robbins is done. Canty and Rocky Bernard are busts! What a waste of money.
Mr. Reese, one last request. Before you fire offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, please tell him he shouldn't run the draw play every four plays and NEVER back to back. It gets predictable and less effective.
Sincerely,
A Giant fan
