Early today, John Lackey and the Boston Red Sox have reached a deal that consists of  $82.5 million dollars under a 5-year contract. The only part of the deal that is still pending is that Lackey must pass the physical. Once he passes the physical, the Red Sox will have John Lackey on their pitching rotation. Once this deal goes through, Lackey will john Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, and Dice-K on the starting pitching roster. This becomes a great pitching staff with the addition of Lackey: Beckett was 17-6 last season and had 199 strikeouts, Lester was 15-8 and had 225 strikeouts last season,  Dice-K had injury problems last season, but the year before that Dice-K was 18-3 with a 2.90 era, and now with the addition of Lackey, who was 11-8 last season and his career with the Angels is 102-71 with a 3.81 ERA in eight seasons with the Angels.  Lackey also shut out the Red Sox through 7 1/3 innings in Game 1 of the AL Division Series (in 2009) and nearly no-hit Boston in 2008. This is a key addition for the Red Sox, and now they all they need some key offensive players, like Matt Holliday and Jason Bay (both are free agents) to improve their team to pose a threat to the Yankees.
