It looks as if the Anaheim Ducks and Brian Burke have given Scott Niedermayer an extension to decide his future with the team.

The Ducks GM phoned Scott on Wednesday to let him know they had decided to extend the deadline until July 1, which is also the day free agents hit the market.

Scott’s agent Kevin Epp noted that Scott would like to still have his decision made by Friday and the defensemen hopes to do so.

"We hope to have an answer Friday with what he hopes to do with his future in hockey," Epp said Wednesday. "I couldn't say one way or the other. I think he doesn't even know some days. I think he thinks one way, maybe retirement might be great but he also enjoys playing hockey, it has been a huge part of his life, I think he would like to continue that way."

After the Ducks' Stanley Cup win in 2007, Niedermayer considered retirement and did not play until Dec. 16 of the 2007/08 season. Over his 48 regular season games, he scored eight goals with 25 points and a minus-2 rating last season.

As for Teemu Selanne, there has been no more speculation on whether he will return to the Ducks, test the free agent market, or retire. Obviously his deadline is July 1. Most of his teammates expect him to retire or continuing playing for the Ducks.

Teammate Francois Beauchemin went as far as to say it would be “impossible” for Teemu to leave the team, although there’s been speculation Canadiens Captain Saku Koivu is trying to convince Teemu to join the Canadiens this season.

All I can say is it better not turn into one huge waiting show like it did last season…

  1. good article matt. burkie might as well do this, because it is scott's legal right to wait until july first to decide. and u know he's not gonna know until july 1 anyway. idk why its such a hard decision. my opinion is that he clearly wants to win a stanley cup, but he doesnt want to play all season for it.

  2. It'd be nice to see Scott figure out what he's doing so the Ducks can make necessary roster adjustments for next season.

  3. He should go back to where he belongs...Where he won Championships...and retire

    1. emphasis on the plural in championships
