Chicago Cubs Lose Two Straight, Carlos Zambrano Out with Shoulder Injury

With their 5-4 loss on Wednesday, the Cubs have dropped two straight one-run games to the Rays at Tropicana Field.

The worse news for the Cubs?

A week after losing Alfonso Soriano to a broken hand, ace Carlos Zambrano left his start Wednesday with a shoulder injury. Zambrano is being flown back to Chicago for an MRI today. The Cubs hope to know more about their ace’s condition on Friday.

Zambrano struggled through much of his start Wednesday, allowing five Rays batters to reach base in the third inning before recording an out.

The Cubs are feeling the toll of the grind of a 162-game season.

Left fielder Reed Johnson was limited in his action on Wednesday because of back spasms. Center fielder Jim Edmonds left the game with a foot injury.

Wednesday also marked Kosuke Fukudome's debut as the Cubs’ leadoff hitter.  Fukudome grounded out on the first pitch of the game.

The Cubs will look to avoid the sweep today before heading back home for the start of the Cross-Town Classic.
