Back when he was still the head football coach at the University of North Carolina, I wrote a letter to their head football coach, Mack Brown.

Ostensibly, I wanted to know what one thing he had found to be most instrumental to his success in life.

At that time, he was still a year or two away from taking over at the University of Texas. In reality, I was hoping he'd shed some light on my own journey. What did he tell me?

I already knew.

Once he was hired at UT, there were some who questioned the Longhorn's choice. Said he wasn't a big game coach.

As Texas prepares to take on Alabama in this year's BCS Championship Game, my thoughts are on the response he sent me so many years ago.

Have a passion for what you do. Do what you want and you'll enjoy your life.

And then he thanked me for asking.

Big game coach?

Are you kiddin' me?
