Rumors are surfacing that Syfy wants better ratings out of their Tuesday night show. What will the WWE do with the "Land of Extreme"? Should they reformat the show and drop the ECW brand all together?
With more competition coming from TNA Impact, they have to do something.
In the following article, I have some ideas of what could be next for Tuesday night wrestling.
The most prominent rumor seems to be that ECW will be changed into strictly a developmental program for up and coming wrestlers. This could be a good way to bring in new Super Stars.
While ECW has been used like this in the past, with Bobby Lashley, C M Punk, John Morrison, The Miz, Jack Swagger, Evan Bourne, and most recently Sheamus, I don't think it is a good direction to take if Syfy wants to attract new viewers.
How will taking off fan favorites like Christian, Shelton Benjamin, and Tommy Dreamer, and replacing them with unknowns, get more people watching?
Do we really need to see talented guys like Jamie Noble get crushed on Monday Night Raw? Lose the ECW brand and bring back the Cruiserweight Division!
Trade the bigger/slower guys like William Regal, Vladimir Kozlov, and Ezekiel Jackson for smaller/ faster men like Rey Mysterio, Jimmy Wang Yang, Carlito, and Primo.
Evan Bourne would become a huge star here. Spotlighting the high flying athletes would bring back excitement, and viewers, to Tuesday nights.
WWE Super Stars such as Matt Hardy, Kane, Finlay, and Chavo Guerrero are getting lost in the shuffel. Why not move them to Tuesday nights and create a Legends title for them to fight over?
All of the veterans who have been with the company for 10 + years have their fans that would follow them to the new show.
And with some of the older guys gone from Raw and Smackdown, it would create more space to elevate the younger WWE Superstars.
Enough of having Raw the "A" show, Smackdown the "B" show, and ECW the "C" show! Why not have 3 equally awesome weekly WWE TV shows? They have enough talent to spread around, just split up the top 15 wrestlers in the company ( each show gets 5 ), and create a new World title.
Make the Tuesday night episode 2 hours long, give the new show a theme, maybe the color green, and build it around Triple H.
With TNA Impact becoming more of a threat, the WWE needs to step up the quality of their product, if they hope to become the top wrestling show on Tuesday nights.
PG and ECW are 5 letters that just do not go together. The Tuesday night show needs to get more extreme, if it hopes to remain being called Extreme Championship Wrestling.
Hardcore, TLC, Inferno, and First Blood matches should all be part of the program on a near weekly basis. One more thing, bring back Rob Van Dam!
A big reason for the early success of the PPVs ECW One Night Stand and the earlier episodes of ECW was that it had RVD, and ECW original, headlining.
