College FB Polls: Week 9 Top 25

Ohio State 24, Michigan State 17

After a 24-0 lead with under seven minutes left in the third quarter, the Buckeyes offense seemed to lagperhaps looking ahead to next week's test at Penn State. Despite a solid performance from the defense all night, Ohio State allowed 17 points during a Spartan comeback. Fourteen of those points came from offensive mistakes.

OSU QB Todd Boeckman tossed a pass under pressure that was easily picked off by the Spartans’ Otis Wiley. Wiley returned the interception 54 yards to put the Spartans on the board. Less than a minute later the Buckeyes had a first down at their own 15 when Boeckman was sacked and fumbled. Linebacker SirDarean Adams sprinted in to scoop up the ball and ran 25 yards to score, making it 24-14. Forty seconds later Chris Wells fumbled on the Buckeye 22, two Spartan defenders had a chance at falling on the ball but neither capitalized on the situation.

Despite the mistakes on offense, the Ohio State defense remained strong throughout the whole game. The Buckeyes were guilty of looking-ahead. I’ll say exactly what I’ve been saying for three weeks: “Now the Buckeyes will have to focus and take their season one game at a time until their November 10th showdown versus Illinois. If the Buckeyes can keep it together and come out victorious on the 10th, they just might have a ticket to the national title game.” Although this week I’ll add the threat of the Nittany Lions next week.

The Eagles have a fairly easy schedule that dampens their credibility for a national title. They crept up to a #2 ranking by default, but I expect them to fall on the road when they face Virginia Tech this week.  The Eagles can still win the ACC championship with one loss.

Boston College and Virginia Tech will have had 12 days to get ready for their key ACC matchup. This game will reshape the national title race as both schools are legitimate contenders. The Eagles started the season out of the Top 25, but now have the second-highest ranking in school history. They were No. 1 for one week in 1942.

The Eagles have the nation's best rushing defense, allowing only 46.4 yards per game. They held Notre Dame to 27 yards on the ground. The Eagles also have one of the best offenses in total yards.

However, my nose smells a Hokie victory.

A few challengers for the Heisman dropped out of competition this weekend. I do not think the Eagles will win this week or that they will go to the big bowl, but I do believe Matt Ryan is a great candidate to take home the hardware and expect him to get an invite to NYC. A great performance in this game, despite a loss, is sure to boost Ryan in many voters eyes.

Ryan has completed 63% of his passes for 2,148 yards, 17 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He threw for two TDs and wasn't intercepted in a 22-3 win over Virginia Tech on Oct. 12, 2006, the teams' last meeting.

LSU 30, Auburn 24

Many times in college sports you hear of a last-second victorythis game truly was one. But what else could be expected in a historic match-up famous for big hits, controversial calls, and dramatic endings. In the past seven years the winner of the Auburn-LSU rivalry has gone on to win the SEC West in five, the SEC Championship in three, and the National Title in one.

With literally one second to spare, Demetrius Byrd turned in the end zone and caught a 22-yard homing missile from Matt Flynn, giving LSU a 30-24 victory over #18 Auburn last Saturday night.

Les Miles has been called a lunatic and a hero. Who cares what he is, as long as he puts the “W” on the board. The Tigers get an extra week to prepare for the other team from Dixie, Alabama.
