The 10 Greatest Upsets of the Stanley Cup Playoffs This Decade

We have seen eight Stanley Cup Playoffs this decade and their have been plenty of memorable games.

There have also been plenty of memorable upsets that will be remembered for years to come. With the decade coming to a close it's times to take a look at some of these amazing upsets and see just how they happened.

10. Hurricanes over Bruins 2009 Semi-finals

This is the latest upset on the list. The Bruins finished first in the East and just one point behind San Jose for the best record in the NHL. The Bruins were coming off a 4-0 sweep of their rival, the Canadiens.

Meanwhile the Hurricanes had finished second in the Southeast Division and upset the New Jersey Devils in the first round by shocking the devils scoring two goals in the last minute of Game 7 to advance to the Semi-finals.

The Bruins won the first game convincingly 4-1 but would go on to lost the next three. Facing a 3 to 1 games deficit they fought back to send the series back to Boston for Game 7.

It would go to OT and Scott Walker would deflect a shot past Tim Thomas to win it for the Canes in OT.

9. Flyers over Canadiens 2008 Semi-finals

The Canadiens were the number 1 seed entering the series after having to fight off a fiesty Boston Bruins team in the Quarter-finals.

The Habs won that series 4-3 but the series left a huge mark on the Canadiens who were clearly winded in their series against the Flyers.

The Flyers came in after upsetting the Capitals in their first round series 4-3. The Flyers were much less tired from their series which helped beat the Canadiens.

Montreal would win the first game but then go on to lose four straight with every game being close decided by only two goals or less each time.

8. Kings over Red Wings 2001 Quarter-finals

This is one of the biggest upsets in Detroit Red Wings playoff history. The Wings won the first two games of the series in convincing fashion 5-3 and 4-0 in Game 2.

As soon as the series shifted to Los Angeles the series shifted as well as the Kings would go on to win both games in Los Angeles and and win the next two as well, winning the series 4-2.

Every game the Kings won was by a goal or less as Games 4 and 6 went into OT. Game 4 was the turning point as Detroit led the game by three goals with just six minutes to go. The Kings would rally tying the game and then winning it in OT.

7. Senators over Flyers 2002 Quarter-finals

The Flyers cam in as the No. 2 seed and looking to advance to the Quarter-finals and not many expected the Senators to be much of a problem.

The seventh seeded Senators were anything but a rollover as they would go on to win four straight after the Flyers won Game 1 1-0 in OT.

Game 2, 3, and 4, weren't very competitive at all as the Senators went on to win each game by a score of 3-0.

The Senators finished off the upset of the Flyers in Game 5 by winning in OT 2-1 in what was one of the biggest upsets in Senators history.

6. Avalanche over Stars 2006 Quarter-finals

The 2006 Playoffs were the first played since the lockout and they didn't disappoint in their first round upsets.

The Stars came in as the second seed and looking to dispatch the Avs early.

Sadly for Stars fans, this wouldn't happen as the Avs jumped all over them from the drop of the puck in Game 1.

The Avs won Game 1 easily 5-2 and followed that up with another two one goal wins both of which came in OT.

The Stars would get their only win of the series in Game 4 but would go down again in Game 5 once again losing in OT for the third time in the series.

5. Ducks over Red Wings 2003 Quarter-finals

The Detroit Red Wings have won two Stanley Cups this decade but have also been upset more then a few times as well.

The Wings had had another great regular season and looking to make a strong push toward the Stanley Cup and a repeat of 2002's Stanley Cup victory.

Things wouldn't go as planned though as the Ducks would go on to sweep the Wings 4 games to none. All four games were decided by a goal but the best of the series by far was Game 1.

The Game would go into three OT periods. It looked like the Wings had won the game 9:21 into the third OT but the goal was called back and with three minutes remaining in the OT the Ducks Paul Kariya found the back of the net giving the Ducks the win.

4. Maple Leafs over Senators 2001 Quarter-finals

This battle of all Canadien teams was also a huge shocker in the playoffs.

The second-seeded Senators were coming off of second division championship and hoping for a deep playoff run but the Maple Leafs had different plans.

The Maple Leafs had squeezed into the playoffs after finishing third in the Northeast Division and weren't supposed to much of a threat.

After being stunned 1-0 in Game 1 the Senators would get shutout again in Game 2 3-0.

Heading back to Toronto the Maple Leafs were flying high and beat the Senators again in Game 3 in OT.

Game 4 had the same result as the Leafs defeated the Senators 3-1 sweeping them right out of the playoffs and sending the Leafs onto the second round.

3. Canadiens over Bruins 2002 Quarter-finals

This one was especially bitter since I'm a Bruins fan.

When two teams have played each other as many times in the playoffs as these two have there are bound to be upsets.

The Habs and Bruins have played each other a record 30 times in the playoffs with most won by the Canadiens.

The Bruins came in as the number seed in the East and hoping to get rid of their arch rivals in convincing fashion. The Canadiens had very different plans.

The teams would alternate wins and losses for the first four games with each team winning by at least two goals as well as the winning team scoring at least 5 goals in each game.

With the series tied at 2 Game 5 was played in Boston and turned out to be a great one as the Canadiens won a thrilling won 2-1.

The series would shift back to Montreal for Game six where the Canadiens finished off the Bruins by a score of 2-1.

This was easily the most shocking upset of the 2002 playoffs and one of the biggest in history and the Bruins and their fans will never forget.

2. Ducks over Sharks 2009 Quarter-finals

For a Sharks team who has been known to choke in the playoffs, this was another disappointment.

After finishing with a league-best 117 points in the regular season hopes were high once again for the Sharks to bring the Cup to San Jose. I guess the Ducks didn't get the memo.

In an all-California matchup the Ducks pulled off a huge upset. The Ducks came into the playoffs with the least amount of points in the regular season having just 91 but that didn't mean anything in this series.

The Ducks won the first two games in San Jose but the Sharks would cut the series to 2-1 winning Game 3 in Anaheim.

The Ducks fired back with a 4-0 shutout of the Sharks in Game five putting the Sharks in danger of another playoff disappointment.

The Sharks were able to win Game 5 in OT but lost the next game 4-1 ending hopes of another long playoff run.

1. Oilers over Red Wings 2006 Quarter-finals

For all the upsets that have happened this past decade this was probably the biggest.

The Red Wings were coming off one of the best seasons in NHL history finishing the regular season with 124 points while capturing the President's Trophy.

The Oilers meanwhile had squeezed into the playoffs with 95 points. The Red Wings won Game 1 as expected but lost Game 2.

In the first game in Edmonton, the Oilers stunned the Wings again winning 4-3 in double OT. The Wings got revenge winning Game 4 to tie the series back at 2-2.

That would be the last game the Wings won as the Oilers would take Game 5 and 6 both by a one goal margin.

The series featured two double OT games, Game 1 won by the Red Wings and Game 3 won by the Oilers.

This is the biggest upset in Red Wings history and will always be remembered while the Oilers will remember pulling the biggest upset and playoff history.

The win would also give the Oilers the boost they neeed as they would move on to the Stanley Cup Finals but lose to the Hurricanes in seven games.
