The New York Mets announced that they have signed first round pick Reese Havens and righthanded pitcher Brad Holt and assigned both to Single-A Brooklyn of the New York-Penn League.

Havens, a shortstop from the University of South Carolina, was the 22nd overall selection in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. Holt, who played his college ball at UNC-Wilmington, was selected with the 33rd overall pick.

Havens, 21, hit .359 (89-248), with 76 runs scored, 13 doubles, 18 home runs and 57 RBI in 63 games during . Follohis junior campaign with the Gamecocks in 2008.

Holt finished his junior campaign at UNC-Wilmington with an 11-1 record and a 3.18 ERA (33 earned runs in 93.1 innings) in 15 starts during the 2008 season.

In 93.1 innings, he allowed 78 hits, of which only 17 went for extra-bases, while walking 36 and striking out 95. He also tossed the Seahawks' first one-hitter since 1992 for the Seahawks in an 11-1 victory over Northeastern on Apr. 5. In that game, Holt struck out seven and waslked none.

I really like Havens, and am quite excited to see him play. The Mets have few good second basemen in the minors. Hector Pellot and Emanuel Garcia are average prospects, but Havens is much better than either of them.
